New Yorkie mommy Hiya all! My hubby and I bought our little buddy about two weeks ago! He's been a lot of fun and oh boy so much work! We are over the road truck drivers so to say Buddy is well traveled would be an understatement! But unfortunately we have encountered a small problem. Buddy has begun tearing his potty pad apart when we both leave him alone in the truck. How do we break him of this??? He is afraid of the vacuum that I have but I have to use it to clean up his mess! Any suggestions would be appreciated! :animal-pa |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on the new addition to your family! Max went through a phase of tearing up his piddle pads. It didn't last long. You could try a holder, but that can cause other problems, especially with leg lifters. You could also try just putting something down to hold one end. Make sure he has plenty of toys and a comfy bed. Max was most likely to tear up his pads when he felt frustrated about being alone (which was rare and brief! spoiled boy, LOL). |
I know you're on the road, but are washable pads an option? Also, they do make "pad holders" for the disposable ones too... |
Washable pads could be an option. Especially because there are times we won't be able to stop to let Buddy out, or at places where he can't be let out. He has lots of toys, and a comfy bed and blankets until we can find the washables we will try holding down the edges while we are away. Thank you so very much for the quick replies!!! |
It's a puppy thing lol both mine did it. Please be careful leaving him alone in a truck, yorkies are the number one stolen breed and you have to think about the temperature. |
No worries about temperature, we have a air conditioning and heating set up so we can keep a temperate environment. As for leaving him in the truck, it's only for us to shower and or grab a sit down meal. Rarely will Buddy be left alone for more then an hour, two at max. We have started rewarding him if he doesn't tear up his pad. Also, if we are in an area where he can safely play in grass then we take him out. We always have a harness and leash the little bugger has some serious speed! |
I think he will have a wonderful life with you. Remember some restaurants will let you take a well behaved pup in, and outdoor dining is usually an option. Also rest areas have exercise places for dogs. We usually picnic for lunch n dinner and your truck might also be set up fo this. We bring a bbq an electric ring and of course our coffee maker. |
