My Yorkie Doesn't Want to Sleep... I just adopted an 8 month old Yorkie. He is extremely active. I have never seen a little dog so full of energy. He likes to go for runs - not walks lol. My sister took him for a 10-15 minute walk around lunch and then I went running/walking for 45 minutes yesterday with him at night. He still wanted to play fetch when we got home. He sleeps in his crate but even at 1-2 am I hear him shuffling around in there. He is up and waiting for me at 4:30 am to go for a walk and eat. I am actually curious if he sleeps! lol. Does anyone else have a super active Yorkie??? :aimeeyork |
Also, he gets really grouchy at around 9:00 and will start nipping and growling if we are not playing with him. |
Welcome to YT, yep, that's a yorkie. Yorkies are high energy babies, zooming through the house always on the go. Some need more exercise then others, seems like you have that type. Does he play and entertain him self, like chasing his ball or killing one of his toys. My 4 girls slowed down between 9 and 10 years old lol. Give him as much outside walks as you possibly can so he will burn off some of that energy, I know with this weather we have been having that may not be possible, but do the best you can. |
Yup that's a yorkie. My yorkie is 5 yrs old and is still hyper active. We walk sometimes 3 miles a day. She doesn't walk either, she runs everywhere. I love her youthful exuberance. It keeps me healthy and young too. |
You don't walk yorkie a you struggle to keep up. My lil guy will be 5 New Year's Eve . He hates winter and will nap if I'm not taking him somewhere in the car. |
Hyper Yorkies Now I know it is not just my Joey that runs and not walks when we go for walks. It is so right you have to run to keep up with them. He is a super hyper puppy at 6 years old and I was wondering shouldn't he have calmed down by now. Now after reading what Matese said I can expect several more years of this. Oh no. LOL Also, when he was a puppy when I first got him I also wondered if he ever slept. I noticed him awake in his crate most often at night and was up early in the am. |
This sounds just like my baby Scottie at 8 months! I would walk him for 2 hours and he'd still have energy to wanna play all night at home. It sounds pretty typical Yorkie to me. ;) I just wanted to note that I've read that it's not a good idea to run with your puppy under 1 years old. Their bones are still developing and the running impact on their bones/joints may be damaging. It's best, if possible, to wait until they're over a year (or 1.5 years? can't remember exactly) before you go running with them over long a duration. Personally, I wanted to be better safe than sorry so I never ran with Scottie. After all, their toothpick-thin legs are so delicate. And besides, I am not a runner anyway. :P Oh and also, besides physical activities, you can also tire him our with mental exercises. You'd be surprised at how tiring training sessions can be for them! |

Cali is 8 years old and will play all day! We do agility and that is the only time she is really tuckered out at the end of the day! She fills the rest of hear day chasing squirrels and straightening out the UPS trucks! Most healthy Yorkie are active! |
At night, when I'm too tired to play, I let them play "hunting for kibble" and hide kibble around the living room. It's a hoot to watch them sniffing like crazy, while I relax on the couch! :D :D :D It's fun to watch them develop their sense of smell too. Scottie already knew how (because I played this with him before Casie came along), so at first he'd find most of it. Then Casie quickly caught on because she realized she was missing out! They're both on par now. hehe... After the little game, they're all ready for bed Zzzz... |
Lots of indoor games you can play. Our fav is find the toy. These are special toys in so far as the only come out of the drawer for the game! Great fun had by all. Then obstacle course made up in your living room is also a hoot. Find daddy or mommy. First one to the washroom. First up on grooming table etc. |
