Advice please
 

My Ruger will be 2 years old next month. He is one very spoiled Yorkie. He is such a mamas boy. We have a very good routine around our house. We have a time set for everything Ruger & I do. From going to bed @ the same time, getting up @ the same time. Eating, outside walks & potty time. He knows exactly when to go into his "tent" when I have to leave the house.
My concern is: I have an opportunity to get a male puppy. Now Ruger does like other dogs. We babysit another Yorkie every now and then, but this one is 9 years and doesn't want to play with Ruger.
What to do. I love him with all my heart. Afraid I'll turn his world up side down.
I would love to have him a brother. I'm also being selfish. I lost my 1st Yorkie @ 7 years old. If something bad happens to one I would still have a baby.
Help with advice please.

No the baby born last week.

My bad, misread it thought you were getting a nine year old.

Any chance of you trying to put them together for a while to see what happens?

Hard to predict how an already established pet will react when a "playmate" comes to reside in the household as opposed to "visiting" ones.

In a Only Dog situation where we assumed he needed a little sister our male Cairn terrier, Bandit had a drastic personality change when he realized the New dog wasn't going away. Although in time he adjusted to having Roxie around something about his personality was never quite the same...they didn't fight but nor were they ever really close "friends".

Although we loved them both, until their dying days I know we deprived Bandit of being the sole object of our affection so in our case the new puppy had unfortunate ramifications.

Not advising "yes" or "No" just relating our experience with a very intellgent & sensitive pet who needed to be THE pet & would have been happier without a playmate.

I also have a Ruger he is a year old and also a spoiled mommy boy. I have yorkies. Mom and 2 siblings brother and sister. I spoil them rotten and I love them like kids

When I had one yorkie she was 3 years old when I got my 2nd yorkie at 8 weeks old, when that one was 3 years old I bought my 3rd 8 week old yorkie puppy home. My experience with bringing home a new kid was, the older one / ones would stay UP on the sofa, away from pouncing, nipping wild child. It took about 2 months for the older girl / girls to stay on the floor with baby jaws. My older girls were very well socialized with ppl and all animals, there was NO jealousy between them, NEVER a fight, growl, snarl between them. They all ate side by side, NEVER stole food from anthers dish,each had their own beds but would all pile up in one bed lol, they LOVED each other. Each had their own place beside me or in my lap. Ruger at 2 years old is still a playful puppy and likes other dogs. I believe he will do just fine with a BFF. Now it's not gonna happen over night, Ruger will stay away from the pounce in your face puppy. Make sure Ruger has a safe place where he can get away from the new kid, always make Ruger first, first to be greeted if you leave them to run chores, first to get a treat, first to be feed. It may take 6 weeks to 2 months for Ruger to stay on the floor in the same room as the baby, do not force him to be friends, let Ruger make friends on his own.

Thank you so much for your wonderful experience. Ruger is 2 years old today (Sat. Jan. 14) it looks like a puppy won't be available till sometime late spring. So he will be almost 2 1/2. I hope it won't be any later than that. Your girls sound so exciting and great pups. Hope I get that lucky!

I have added dogs to our house.. I find males get alone better and the females compete with each other.

There really is not a sure fire way to know how the adjustment will be... it depends a lot on the personality of the puppy. I do think, with your help, they will be ok.

Piper just loves other pint-sized dogs when we're out and about, but she's the first to walk away. She's made it clear that she doesn't think dogs should be allowed in the house, thank you very much! Piper is quite content being the center of the universe in our home!

I think it could go good or bad what you have to ask your self can I live with the bad.
