Looking for some advice Hi all, I have an 11 year old Yorkie that is my baby and I love him to pieces. My mom and I got him and his brother at the same time. They spend alot of time together but my mom and her yorkie have left for Florida for the winter and I can tell my little guy is missing him. He is home alone all day while I am at work, so I was thinking of getting another yorkie but am a bit nervous because he has always been the only dog in the house and doesn't seem to care for any other dogs other than his brother. Has anyone ever added a puppy to the family with an older dog? If so how did it go? Thanks!! |
All my older dogs got used to the wee puppy quite quickly. Supervision of interactions though is always advised. |
Wall-e is 7 and we just got14 week old Daisy a month ago. It was rough at first. Wall-e liked having a playmate but didn't like that she came to bed with us, and would give me the most pitiful look of betrayal. It's been improving, though. Bedtime is still rough as they figure it their spots on the bed. Just give the older dog lots of love and attention, he always has to get greeted and fed first so that the little one knows who's alpha. I catch them giving each other kisses now. The biggest thing for me is forgetting how much energy puppies have! Wall-e is so well behaved we never had to worry about him getting into trouble, now we can't let Daisy out of our sight! |
Pretty much what everyone has said. We have been there too.....there may be some attitude, but they'll calm down and be best buds before you know it:aimeeyork |
We added the second dog this spring after 3 years with our first dog it didn't go so well its been a bit hard the first dog doesn't like her toys touched and there have been fights. We have to keep the toys closed off till I am able to watch. They get along most of the time put we cant leave them together when we go out. It can be a game changer. |
