Water bowl woes Max is suddenly afraid of his water bowl. We have no idea what happened. He approaches it cautiously, as if something is going to jump out at him. Takes a sip, moves back. After some testing, I figured out that it isn't the temperature of the water. He happily drinks off of a big spoon if I dip it in the water bowl and serve it to him. I have put out several options for him to drink out of, but he is reluctant with all of them. My only options are the spoon, the sink faucet, and a water bottle. None of them are practical. Why Max, why? |

Is he wearing a collar with tags. If so, maybe his tags are hitting the bowl and scaring him. |

Maybe try a water fountain? I know they are a pain but it might work. Have you tried putting a treat in the bowl when there is no water in it to try and get him comfortable with it again? |
Obviously you were getting rather complacent regarding Max drinking water out of his bow--several times a day. Max determined your matter-of-fact attitude, insofar as his water, could lead to other lackadaisical behavior on your part. Smart little sucker decided to nip possible problems in the bud, thus spoon-drinking! I think someone better stay on her pretty little toes...! Big ol' smooch, Maximo!!! |

I never had a problem with any of my girls drinking water, but, I had one girl that LOVED to drink her water out of a coffee mug. It's worth a try. I like Taylor's idea of treat in empty bowl. |
My Mickey did the same thing when we got a stainless steel bowl. I switched to a fountain and that was way worse. He was terrified of the noise. If you want him to drink just ignore his behavior. No reaction and voila, he started to drink. |
Hi our puppy is 8 months old we bought a large ball ice maker from amazon £2.99 we freeze 4 ice balls put one in our whskie and one in her water bowl we roll it round in the water (so her tongue does freeze to it) and she loves it she chases the ice ball round her dish trying to catch it and drinks loads of water the ice ball takes ages to melt as it is approx 2 and half inches big hope that helps. Thank you everyone for the suggestions. I fed Max a few kibble treats holding them over his water bowl. That helped a little and he took more than a few sips of water at one time. Jean, we've tried the hamster style water bottle in the past and had some issues with static electricity and shocks. :eek: Had to give up on that. I've tried mugs and tall glasses, but Max associates those with my human drinks that are bad for him, so he stays away. I put out dishes made of different materials. He isn't interested. Also trying just staying calm, not making an issue of it, and hoping that he will just get over it and start drinking again as Dudley's Mom recommended. |
So still after all of that nothing?? Lil' stinker! You may want to try what you are giving him. Try adding a wee bit of evaporated milk with a tad bit of can dog food to his water bowel. That should get him to ANY bowel. You can mix with 80% water and keep the mixture in the fridge. Than slowly ween him off of the mixture and back to 100% water. If you do try this, I'd suggest only giving small portions a couple times a day. The evaporated milk can cause some change in his stool. |
