By how old should our girl be potty trained She's about 6 and a half months old. We've been doing "ok" with the potty training. We have a pretty good schedule. Pee and poop in the morning, when we get in from work, pee after dinner, and then before bed. We have had problems with her going in the house at times after being outside. She doesn't give us "signs" that she has to go. It's more of we just have an idea at that time of day. Will she get better, or is there anything we should be doing different to help get her better with this? Will she ever learn to give us a "sign" that she has to go outside and not go in the house? It's our first dog, so we really don't know what to expect. Thank you! |
Yorkies can be so, so stubborn. Barney wasn't fully trained until he was around a year old. |
I keep Gidget on a leash at all times in the house. When she needs to go pee in her puppy apartment bathroom, she lets me know and she "leads" me to the bathroom. If she's on the leash but NOT not connected to my arm, she will do her business wherever. It's like the leash on my arm is a reminder to tell me when she needs to go. Most of her training (she's almost 10 mos), is done toward the puppy apartment bathroom. When we go for our walks during the day, she will do her business outside wherever we are but she doesn't get a treat or any recognition for that. She only gets treats and praise when she does it inside in her puppy bathroom. This works for me but might not for others. Each furbaby is different and each living situation is different. Just find what works best for you and whatever keeps the stress level low. They seem to be sensitive to our stress. Just keep at it. Like it was with Gidget, it will suddenly click. |
Have you tried putting a bell on the door? This has worked great for us. |
Yorkies have small bladders and may need to go out more often. Patience is the number one rule. I use a pee pad for ours in the house and motorhome then she can go when she wants. When your baby goes potty reward her and eventually she will get the idea if I go out I get a treat. Susan |
All my now passed puppies were 100% pad trained at 5 months with NO accidents, then I started to house break them, at 7:30 AM they were leash walked, even if they had made on the pad they were walked, at 4:30PM I returned from work, they were leash walked again, even if they went on the pad, they were walked anyway. By 7 months old they were 100% house broken with NO accidents. At 10PM they were taken out for their last pee-pee then it was bed time. My pups were not tiny, they were 9 pounds 13 Lbs and 17 Lbs. It's all about schedule, they were fed at a certain time, same time every morning and every night, they get use to being walked at a certain time and will wait until that time. There was no need for them to give me a sign when they had to potty. Now I am a home owner with a yard and a rescue baby, he lets me know when he needs to go out. |
Scottie was outdoor potty trained by the time he was 1 year old and completely realiable by 1.5 years. Casie has been more difficult. For whatever reason unlike Scottie, she had no issues with soiling herself in her crate :(. Her bladder has been harder to train - like me, when she's gotta go, she's gotta go. Getting her to adhere to a schedule was hard, but she's 13 months now and we're still going strong on the training. She's learning to hold it in now so hopefully by 1.5 to 2 years she'll be golden and without accidents! |
I would say keep being on a schedule. Add a few more trips outside when you think she needs it. I love crate training. Keep at it, she should have it really soon. I also have done positive reinforcement after pottying outside whether a pat or a clicker and a tiny treat. |
All pups are different and progress at different ages. If you can get a pup fully potty trained by the age of one year your doing great. Lol Here are some things that helped me train my pups. Training Tips - Dawn's Yorkies |
