Does my yorkie have poodle in him? 3 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, I have a yorkie with CKC papers, purchased directly from a breeder, but I often question if I have been duped. He is 10 lbs (at 9 months old), has a soft, wavy coat that mattes easily and is a bit fuzzy when brushed, and a very square prominent snout. There is nothing delicate about this dog! He's cute as a button, but I'm suspicious. The breeder used to be a poodle breeder, so I'm wondering if her lines got crossed at some point. She gave me copies of his alleged lineage that included champion yorkies, and I saw the two dogs she said were the parents. They were both shaved short at the time so hard to know what their coats were like but they were 5 and 6 pounds. There are a couple reasons why I care: I paid full price for a CKC registered yorkie, I wanted a more petite yorkie with long hair and a top knot, and just the principal of it. I don't want to return him (although he is very mischievous and disobedient and I think about it some days!) but I feel like I need to get to the bottom of this. Any suggestions? Also, take a look at his pics...am I crazy? Are there just yorkies that don't have the silkier coat? His coat reminds me of a Wheaton terrier's coat in terms of texture. |
Oh for Heaven's sake, this is one cute little dude! I have no expertise, but he is certainly looks more Yorkie than anything else. My Piper is a 9+ lbs adult Yorkie and there are several purebred Yorkies who weigh-in at double digits. What's his name? Dang adorable little pooch, for sure!!! |
He really looks like my Yorkie! Also 10 pounds at that age and with the same coat type. Yours is adorable! |
He's beautiful. My first yorkie was larger also and I loved that about him. He was the best running partner I have ever had (don't tell my hubs). |
Purebred Yorkies come in different coat styles. The pure silk coat while ideal for the Yorkie doesn't often show up in a pet placement. Your adorable pup looks like all Yorkie to me. |
OMG, I want him, that is one outrageous beautiful lil yorkie boy, he looks so much like my now passed matese who as an adult weighed in at 17 pounds. My now adopted by has that wavy coat and one of my other also now passed girls had a wavy coat like your boy. My dear, he is YORKIE, mischievous YES, disobedient, can be at times, it takes training and lots of patience with these yorkies. I am sorry that you are disappointed because you have a big boy and not a 5 lb silky haired boy. Maybe at some point you can get another baby, a smaller one, yorkies are very addictive, like potato chips, ya can't have just one. I adore the lil 5 pound babies, but the larger ones best suit my life style. My 4 now passed girls weighed 1 at 9 lbs, 2 at 13 lbs and my last girl at 17 lbs and was 17 yo when she went to rainbow bridge. My adopted boy is 12 lbs, due to his wavy hair he sports a puppy cut with his top knot of course. Love that lil boy he one gorgeous yorkie. |
My yorkue looks the same to.. Had a breeder tell me she was to big but her parents are same size hes beautiful. |
In either case he is absolutely adorable!!!!! Love him!!!! |
Ckc like Canadian kennel club? |
Your beautiful dog looks all Yorkie to me. I do understand your wondering though, as my Pippi, has a longer nose, longer legs and curly fur, huge ears, she looks a bit poodle when clipped short...and our breeder also breeds toy poodles. You can see her in my album, to compare to your's if you'd like. We also wondered if there had been a mix up and nearly did a test to check. As she's got older, we think she's all Yorkie, just not standard, her mother looked all Yorkie except for a curly coat. Our Caleb came from the same breeder. If you really need to know you can do a DNA test at the vets. |
My girl Cali is very small and delicate (4lbs) but she has what is called a cotton coat. It is just like your boy's. Yorkies have two types of coats, silky & cotton...looks like your little guy is a cotton coat too! He totally looks 100% yorkie to me. Cali's dad has long silky hair but her mom has the curly cotton coat like she does. :) |
He's still a puppy. I think his coat will change in the next few months. Mine always have. |
He looks like my Bubba. Bubba weighs 10 lbs. and has a cottony coat that curls when it is longer. Bubba is 11 now and there are still days that I want to send him back to the breeder. If its missing, Bubba took it and it's under the bed! He looks 100% adorable yorkie to me. |
My Penny is pure Yorkie but right after a bath, her hair turns into all curls. |
I think they refer to that as a cottony coat. My Duchess has a somewhat cottony coat but my previous yorkie had a silky coat. Looks like he is a perfect candidate for the teapot club. |
