Second puppy, are we crazy? Hi, long time since I posted though I do enjoy reading through threads frequently. We have a 2-year old sweetie pie named Winston and YT was so helpful to us before and after we got him. He has been just a wonderful little guy and we are ready to add another one to our family. In a couple of weeks we'll go back to TyAva Yorkies, where we got Winston, and probably get another little boy. My husband and I are excited, but go through periods of thinking maybe we've lost our minds....We had 2 for years, Cozy & Peanut, but Cozy was very much my husband's and Peanut was more mine. This time we're both equally involved with Winston so the 2nd puppy will be a different situation. Anyway...I'm looking for advice about bringing a puppy in with (spoiled, used to having undivided attention) Winston. I know a lot of you have multiple Yorkies, does it work out well in terms of pecking order---does one have to be dominant or can you just smooch them both up equally? Winston is not an alpha personality (Cozy definitely was so there was never a question of who was in charge), and I sure don't want him to get bullied. Any suggestions for integrating the new baby into the family, or for what to look for when we're choosing little brother? |

Good luck with your newest member of the family! Very exciting indeed! |
Not crazy at all Good for you! It is always exciting, and nerve wracking I feel comfortble with 2 or 3, with ages spaced out. I found it more difficult with 4 (especially when 2 were very large). Three is just my comfort level number, and now adding number 3 this weekend, though I have enjoyed 2 a lot, it has been easy! |
We added the second one in the spring of this year. Bella is about 3 1/2 now and Lily was 13 weeks when we got her. Lily is the bully put Bella has a breaking point and when that happens it gets nasty. They do play together sometimes put it hasn't been easy . We love our new Lily so much but it has been a bit of a go . If I could turn the clock back I think we would stay with just one. Saying that we did put two female together. It hasn't been a full year yet and Lily is still a puppy so thing can change put I don't think they will ever cuddle up and sleep together. |
It probably depends on the personalities. WE had my mom's dog(not a yorkie) for a couple months & it brought out bad behavior in Shield. HE started peeing in our kitchen. I was at my wits end. Once mom took her dog again, he was fine again. No more peeing inside. They were both males so I was thinking it might have been a dominant issue. Shield feels that he is the boss except with the cats. |
Thanks for your input....both boys will be neutered so that's not an issue. I'm reading a lot on how to introduce a new puppy with an only dog--with an established routine. I know it will shake things up around here! |

Hopefully you will have a good experience. I have introduced females to females well and a male to a female in the past and never had an issue. The only issue I have experienced was that pee issue. So, the chances of it not working are probably low. Enjoy the new pup. |
