Changing name of new adult Yorkie? What are your thoughts on changing the name of a newly adopted 1 1/2 y/o Yorkie? |
Go for it! We brought Teddy home at 8 months old from our breeder and changed his name. He was originally Tank, but loved his new name instantly. Sometimes dogs will respond better to one name over another. Two syllables names are usually advised, although Max loves his one syllable. Say the name a lot, and say it lovingly, and your doggy should respond. |
Should be no problem! It'd probably be easiest to use a clicker. I'd click every time he or she looks at you, and then reward. Then after a number of repetitions I'd add the name. Your yorkie should know their name down pat within a short period of time. A clicker reduces the number of repetitions needed. And dogs can learn that different words require the same response from them. If you wanted to you could teach your dog to respond to a bunch of different names. There's lots of people who just start calling their dog a name without ever training them to respond to their name. No reward or anything for the correct response. Doing that they may, over time, learn to respond to their name, but I think they learn quicker and you get a more consistent and cleaner behaviour from them in terms of responding to their name if you teach it to them as you would the same way as training for sit, stay, come, etc. Training them to respond to their name is one of the easiest things to teach. The hard part is choosing the name. I spent so many hours trying to figure out the names for my dogs. |
Sure...it should not be a problem. I have changed the name of dogs much older than that. One was named 'Spade' when we rescued her off the streets after she was deprived of food and water by her previous owner before being turned out to fend for herself, but she was such a sweet girl who just loved little boys, and the name was just 'not her' so I changed her name to Samantha...Sammie, for short. Because of the differences in the names, and her age, we called her "Sammie Spade" or "Samantha Spade" interspersed with just "Sammie" or "Samantha" until she got used to the new name...which didn't take long, then never called her "Spade" again after she started responding to "Sammie." We found a great home for her...with a family that had little boys, of course. :D You may find your dog likes the new name and you will have no problem changing the name, too. I have had dogs and cats who 'preferrred' a different name from the instant they heard the new name, and quit responding to their original name as soon as they had a 'new' name. :D |
I adopted my boy he was 2 1/2 years old, his name was THEODORE, to much of a mouth full for me lol, I changed it to Cody with in two days he was responding to his new name. Just make sure once you start calling him by his new name NEVER use the old name. |
Thank you all SO much for the advice on potentially changing a young adult Yorkie's name. I have only seen pictures of him so far, but to me his name does not fit his face, know what I mean? (I could be wrong, however.) I get to meet him tomorrow afternoon & I am soooo excited but nervous too. I hope we have a "connection" & I come home with a new member of our family. |
