Advice for adding a young adult Yorkie I have my 5 y/o girl & 14 mo. old male Yorkies & have decided to add another furbaby to our family. Riley needs a playmate badly & Lexi needs him to have a playmate as he tries to engage her in play constantly & after almost a year Ms. Princess is just not having it. Lol I feel so sorry for Riley too as he wants to play so badly. Lexi can't even move without Riley play attacking her to the point she limits even getting off the sofa. Very sad watching both of them. I feel the answer may be adopting another Yorkie. I am a stay at home mom so feel this may work out well. I would appreciate any advice you may have regarding adding a 1 1/2 y/o Yorkie to our family. My other two were 12-14 weeks when I got them. I will be going Monday to meet the little guy. |
Very exciting! The main piece of advice I would give is to let Riley and Lexi establish their relationship with the new dog on their own terms. Don't interfere too much, except to give leadership to the group as a whole. |
Congratulations on getting a new Yorkie friend for your Riley. You may not even have to worry, since your boy seems to really want/need a playmate. I got Brody when he was 14 months old, and three months later, I got Mia as a playmate/friend for him...both Brody and Mia were 17 months old when we got Mia...they are days apart in age, and they were inseparable friends immediately...and still are. It may give Lexi the 'space' she needs, and you all may be much happier in the long run. |
Really great advice - thank you so much. I am thinking I will introduce the new member to Lexi & Riley individually in our back yard. I don't want the new little guy to be too overwhelmed. What do you think? |
It is advised / suggested to introduce on neutral grounds, your back yard belongs to Riley and Lexi. Leash walking them together could be a good way of a meet and greet, holding Riley and Lexi's leash in one hand and the new kid's in your other hand. Even your front lawn is neutral area. |

I absolutely prefer to introduce on neutral territory. It has been my experience that it seems to put both dogs more at ease, since neither one 'owns' the territory or feels protective of it...there is no 'outsider' invading the 'personal' space, and both can be much more interested in 'sniff-estigating' the area than confronting each other. When we went to get Mia, I took Brody with me and introduced them on the grounds of the complex where Mia's previous owner lived. I made sure Mia's previous owner knew I would be bringing Brody to make sure they got along, and Mia was very happy to show Brody where she lived, and compete playfully with him over who got to sit in my lap...LOL When I was preparing to puppysit for a friends two (a purebred Yorkie and a Yorkie-Poo mix), we met on a school ground a couple blocks from where she lived...my Yorkie kids came by car and were on the ground when my friend walked over with her dogs. All five dogs had a great adventure, especially since there was a fence and we could close the gate and they could run free and play, explore, and get to know each other...and it was all very civil between the dogs. |
