Yorkie Help Please I just adopted a 7 yr old female Yorkie. I want to train her to use pee pads in the bad weather, i.e. snow & rain. Would it be to confusing for the dog be pee pad trained and to go outside? How do you train an older yorkie to use pee pads? |
I don't know how to train an older yorkie to use the pads, but my yorkie was trained (since a pup) to use both pads and go outside. |
Hummmm, that's gonna be a tricky one, how bout when you walk her just as she squats to pee stick a pee pad under her so the pee goes on the pad, then praise her like crazy saying pee pee on the pad and give her a treat (or what ever word you use for pee pee) same when she poops, just as she hunches over put a pad under her the poop will go on the pad, again praise like crazy saying poo poo on the pad and give her a treat. Take pee pads and treats with you every time you walk her. This may take a while. On your first rain day lay a pad down in a designated area and tell her pee pee, poo poo on the pad. I am formally from NY, was a tenant with no back yard and a pack of 3 yorkies, in rain, hail, sleet or snow, them in their winter coats or raincoats, me in my boots and umbrella out we went for their walks. Just a heads up in case you cannot pad train this 7 yo. AND THANK YOU for rescuing. |
Congratulations on adopting your girl! If you want to use the pee pads only for inclement weather, I too think that would be confusing for your baby to only have the pads sometimes. My boys are pad and outdoor trained, but they always have the pads available. I have a friend who trained her Yorkie girl to use pads in the garage during bad weather. Having a designated area that seems outside of the home is usually the only way to successfully use pads only part time. If you want to pad train, limit her roaming room to a smallish area with the pad. Use keywords like "potty here." The disposable pads have a scent infused to attract the dog. When she goes on the pad, praise profusely and give her a small reward. Do the same outdoors so that she associates both with good potty. Teddy was 100% outdoor trained when we brought him home at 8 months. I successfully trained him to use the pads. Convincing him to poop on the pad was the hardest part. I had to line up several pads and corral him. When he finally gave in, he was relieved to see how happy I was and that I took care of disposing the poop right away. :) |
