How do you handle these questions? I've known for years I wanted a male Yorkie, and did my research looking for a reputable breeder. I work at a school so I knew I would want to get the puppy at the beginning of summer so I'd be home with him. Even then after finding a breeder I had to wait two summers because each summer circumstances were that I wasn't going to have the time a new puppy required. Finally this summer I brought home Walter. Needless to say I'm over the moon! What's surprised me is people asking if I rescued or bought him and the negative attitude I get when I say I bought him. Also I'm surprised that people ask how much I paid. When asked how much I say "Not nearly enough for the amount of happiness he's brought me" I was curious as to others being asked these questions and how you handle them? |
Hi, and welcome to Yorkietalk! I am so excited for you finally getting your little Walter. I can tell he is going to be a very loved little boy. Your response to the "how much did he cost" question was perfect. I guess ppl tend to be nosy or curious. It's really none of their business. When I got my yorkies I looked for two years in rescue for a small, younger dog. They are usually hard to find around here because people usually snap them up so quickly. I just told ppl that (if they really needed to know). I never let rude questions bother me. It's just not even worth giving them a second thought. Glad to have you here. I'm looking forward to hearing all about Walter. |
Welcome to YT, I LOVE your answer as to how much you paid lol, cute. It is very common for ppl to ask what you paid. Prices for yorkies vary greatly. WHEN I had puppies and was asked that very same question, I would tell them, it was no big deal to me. I now have an adopted boy and VERY PROUD to say I "rescued" my boy and saved a life. I LOVE puppies, I am older now then when I had my 4 females as puppies, an older baby best suits my life style now, he was a puppy 2 1/2 yo, there are soooo many yorkies in shelters that need good loving homes if you are looking for an older baby. NEVER let anyone make you feel guilty for choosing a PUPPY, they are so much fun and wonderful to watch them grow into their own unique little personalities. Enjoy that little baby. |

I felt the same way when I first had puppy Max. My head was in the clouds, I loved my little guy so much, so my response was more like, "What? Huh? Isn't he cute?!" :D Same thing when I brought home his brother Teddy a year later. |
This instance is a little different from yours, but long ago while strolling through a big yard sale with my German Shepherd; a macho guy swaggers up and asks, "How much for your dog?" Having difficulty processing the question (who asks that??), I said no price, she wasn't for sale. "C'mon, everything has a price! How much?" I just stared at him and said, "How much for your right arm?" People don't even know how rude or pushy or invasive they're being!! However, I totally love your response and agree with others that we love our little canines, no matter how they came into our lives! |
That reminds me of the time my husband and I were in a showroom looking at cars. I was carrying Teddy Bear. A man approached me and said his wife just lost her beloved dog who looked just like Teddy Bear. He wanted to buy Teddy on the spot and told me to name my price. I don't know how ppl think that someone would just hand over their dog without a second thought. I told the guy that Teddy Bear was family and he was not for sale. It made me feel kind of sick. |

We had this happen to us once! A woman at the post office approached us and asked us if we were interested in selling one of the doggies. She was older, very well dressed and driving a luxury car, so I knew she wasn't kidding. Honestly, a billion dollars couldn't sway me to let go of one my doggies. |
People are.... idiots. LOL. Ignore them, as hard as it is. You love your little boy and there is nothing wrong with going through a reputable breeder. |
Thank you Thank you all for your replies, I really appreciate them :) |
