Eating Bowl problem Hi, I have a 3.5 pound Yorkie. She is very sensitive as all of them are. She is scared of her eating and drinking bowls. The ones she has now are 5 inch in diameter (with 0.6 inch trim included) It is the smallest bowl I found. She is still afraid. She might be afraid because of the trim maybe. But also the color is pink. You think the color repels her? She is 3 and a half years old and still eating from my hand two or three times a day. What are your suggestions? Any suggestions where I can look for alternative bowls. Thank you so much... |
I have a 3.75 pound yorkie and a 4 pound Biewer. I bought several types of tiny bowls that they both refused to eat from. I finally put their food on a 5" flat plastic plate - success!!! For the past 3 years have used nothing but plastic disposable plates. I do use them for as long as possible before I toss them. It can get expensive, but they love them and gobble their food up. Call me a crazy dog person :D |
Piper eats from a shallow, stainless steel, oval-shaped dish; prior to that she ate from a shallow, ceramic bowl (ear-marked for cats). Giving her a meal in/on anything else is a no go! It's a tricky business this feeding thing...!! |
My Riley is 3.5# & not a great eater & also has issues with bowls. He has issues with stainless I think due to his reflection and/or the noise it may make when he eats (he doesn't wear a collar where it clangs but the eating process does cause "sounds".) With him, I think it has to do more with the rims on bowls/putting his head "inside" the bowl. I could be wrong, but that is what it seems like to me. He sometimes won't eat if I am not in the same room with him/can't watch me while he eats. (I think he is just afraid he will miss out on something. Lol) I too have to hand-feed him sometimes if it has been too long since he ate last. I am going to try a kitty saucer next. |

I had similar problems and finally bought a baby dish online that is flatish but has 2 divided sections and my little girl is very happy with it. She will sometimes hold out for being hand fed just because she likes it I think.... if it comes to that, I'll hand feed a couple of pieces and then she will carry on. |
today I put her food in a very small tea bag holder dish. Even that she can’t approach But she drank water from her bowl. Very small amount though :( I am having really hard time :( |
Try putting it on a paper towel. I have one that will only eat her food that is on a paper towel. |
I sort of have this same problem. I use a Corelle brand dish. It is really small. I think they call it a vegetable side dish. I also use a puzzle feeder. I think it is designed to give treats, but food works great in it. It also gives them a mental workout. This is Lexi's preferred way to eat. She seems to like working for her food. I can put food in a small dish and it will just sit there all day. If I transfer it to a puzzle, she gobbles it right up. I also put her kibble or dehydrated raw food in a plastic bottle. She loves to play with that bottle and when the food falls out she loves it. The crazy things we do! |
Ginger will not eat from a bowl either. She only eats from a plate or the floor. |

I have actually resulted to spoon feeding her. this is the only way she will eat |
Thank you everyone. I will try all or the suggestions suggested by you :) |
lol my girl will drink from her bowl but normally she prefers being handfed :p not that she's scared or anything, just prefers it >_<;; We still have the larger steel bowls from when we had our two other JRs been thinking of getting her something smaller for her food. |
Try a kitty dish as they are shallow compared to dog bowls. I have the stainless kitty bowl with the blue rubber skid ring on the bottom from Petco & mine do very well with them. I do have 1 that prefers a plate. I bought a saucer from Goodwill & he loves that little plate. Dogs do not like for their faces to be covered by deep dishes as it makes them feel vulnerable so the more shallow the better. |
