Growling? Our girl is about 6 and a half months old. In the recent weeks, she has developed a growling habit. For example, she loves playing with our socks if they're on the floor. She'll pick them up and chew on them and run under the bed and keep a stash. But if we would pick it up and take it away from her, she'll growl and try to be as menacing as possible and put her teeth on your foot. (not that she bites. she knows not to bite). Is this a habit that needs broken, or is it something she'll grow out of? We aren't quite sure how to handle it. At first, it was comical. Anything that she doesn't "approve" of us doing to her (like putting her on our bed when she's not ready for bed yet, or taking something away she shouldn't be chewing), she'll act like this big dog who is going to scare us lol. But i'm starting to wonder if I should be doing something to stop this. Any input would be appreciated! |
Sounds like playing. Max growled playfully when he was a pup. He growled and grunted a lot when we played fetch and tug-o'-war. I think growling is a Yorkie puppy thing. When he was unhappy with something, usually when I would accidentally bump into him, he would take my hand and gently put his teeth on my finger. He grew out of that. The gentleness with the teeth that your girl is displaying indicates good "bite inhibition." As long as she isn't biting down hard, I don't think you need to worry. Work on basic trick training and obedience, but I don't think you need to worry. |
Piper growls when we're playing which is fine and she'll growl when working on getting treats because she is trying not to bark (which is unacceptable). In her case, it's just another form of expression. |

The funniest is when he grouses at his little brother about being too close to him, trying to snuggle in bed. Rrrrrgggg. :D |
Growl real or play ? I am no expert but I would watch this growling and see if it IS actually play or if it might develop into her thinking she can boss you out of what she does not want you to do. I had a Yorkie that would growl and not let us have things and she was not playing either. I hope these are only play growls but if she is doing this when she does not like what you are doing she needs to know it is not ok. They will take advantage of you if you let them get their way. Best wishes for you all. |
Max makes all kinds of interesting noises to try to talk to us. He sounds like Scooby Doo or Astro. Now that's hilarious! |

barking and growling at a toy or at another family dog during play is something I tolerate- cute and playful and normal - growling at me when I take something away - no way! It is easy to discount that behavior as cute but the next thing would be snapping so better be on guard-it is plain disrespectful ... I usually give our puppies a reprimand in a deep voice and if needed turn them onto their back. I don't allow playing with clothing- socks are sort of cute with puppies but anything with a human smell should be off limits for chewing and hiding - they just can't tell the difference between a lowly sock and an expensive clothing item ... :-) But those yorkie puppies are so darn cute ... I have a hard time convincing my family not to let Bella get away with murder ...One puppy look and everyone melts haha ... It is quite funny though ... even though I am probably the strictest family member she is following me everywhere and prefers my lab over everyone else ... :D |
