How long should I let my 10 week old puppy run around? So I got my puppy a week ago and she just turned 10 weeks. She was weighed at the vet last friday and she's 1.6 lbs. She's a healthy, happy pup and so she's got a lot of energy and always wants to play. I usually let her run around (supervised of course) in the living room and she loves it. I also have a persian cat she likes to chase and the cat seems to like it too as he keeps coming back every time. My question is how long should I let her play? She doesn't seem to know when enough is enough and I don't want her to run herself sick (hasn't happened yet but I am aware that small dogs can get low blood sugar). I keep her food and water dish out when she's playing too in case she gets thirsty or hungry and after play time she goes back in her pen for a nap. Would 20 minutes be too long of playtime for a puppy her size and age? Thanks in advance. |
That's a tough one. I have a very energetic yorkie and I once fostered a kitten until I could find it a home (which I now wish I would of kept....not to worry, she's in a good home.). Anyway they bonded within minutes of meeting each other and it started almost immediately. They were chasing each other, playing with each other and then they would fall asleep with each other which is the reason I now regret finding the kitten another home. Because they were so playful, I had to separate them mainly for my own sanity. With the kitten, I was afraid her little heart was going to bust so I would break it up after about a half hour or so to get her to calm down. She would take a quick kitten nap and she was back playing. Most of the time though, they would stop if they got tired own their own. At night was the worst because, they would chase each other back and forth across the bed while I was trying to sleep......I had to put her in the expen at night because those two were driving me crazy. |
Max is like that too when he gets another animal to play with him...I just keep his soft food nearby and put a piece on my finger and he gets little snacks while playing. Who could resist mom hand feeding you! Nice thing is it wears them out so they sleep good 😀 |
A tired puppy is less likely to be getting into trouble. Usually I insist on puppies and dogs getting as much exercise as possible. With your baby being so young and tiny you do need to be very aware of her energy level. I would hate to have you stop her play but do make sure she is eating OFTEN. They can burn off those calories so fast! You can give her some of her food occasionally just to make sure she doesn't get a low sugar level. A treat now and then is good as long as she is eating all her food as she should. Usually they will just fall asleep when they have had enough. |
I have always just let mine play until they are tired. If you are worried about blood sugar you can keep an eye on the pups guns if they go pale then sugar is needed if they are staying pink they are fine. |
