Vacation Anxiety!please help Hello everyone. Any advice or experience stories are welcome. First let me say boarding him or taking him with us are both not an option . We are going on vacation from Oct 13-18 . Before I booked the vacation I did make arrangements for Tupac. Now the friend of mine who was going to stay at,my house and stay with him got a new job and can not do it :-( needless to say I am full blown anxiety now. I work from home so he is always with me . I mean yes he gets left alone for a normal few hours night out or run some errands. So now my dilemma is my friend is still going to stay at my house but he will be alone from 830 a.m until about 4 p.m .... 8 1/2 hours I feel like is a very long time. I'm terrified he is going to get sick or shake from separation anxiety. He even sleeps with me every night... any,one out there with some.experience in this type of situation? I am at the point of cxlng vacation but 4000 is a lot of money to just throw away |

You could find a puppy daycare to have your friend drop him off at. Max has been going there before hiring this girl to come to the house and he really liked the little dogs there. |
I think the option you have is an *awesome* one, even if they have to go to work. If you're bothered, check Rover.com for someone in your area to stop by mid-day. |
Why can't he go into boarding? My dogs are boarded 1 to 2 times per year and the LOVE it. They pull their leashes to get through the front door and don't even look back at us when we leave. They play with other small dogs all day and are worn out when they get home. Find a place that has boarding and doggie day care and let him go to daycare for a day to see how he does. If it works out well, then take him a second time. That way, when you take him for boarding, he will already be familiar with the place and will be very excited to be there. |
He can not go to boarding bc the only one near me is not a good place to use. Numerous horror stories ( one person who had one I know personally ) . I am not taking that risk . Unfortunately his vets office does not offer the service |
You have a few weeks before you leave. I would do a few trial runs of leaving him for a few hours at a time. I think your option of the friend house sitting is a great one. |
I would suggest Rover.com. There are a lot of pet sitters that advertise on that site. Otherwise, what about training him now to be alone for longer periods of time. I have left my dogs alone for 8 hours a day and they do fine. I do confine them to the kitchen with a baby gate. I leave them water, food, bedding, pee pads, and toys. I also have a camera set up to watch them. That might be an option if you cannot find someone to watch them all day |
Progress has been made.. my friend received her schedule and fortunately the way it falls almost fully coincides with my vacation. He will.only be alone one day for a few hours and my brother and grandmother agreed to come and check in on him that day. WHEWWW . I also told my husband we need to get him adjusted to being alone more than two hours. Luckily he does have free roam of the 1st floor of my house and I must say he does great. As long as there aren't stray pieces of paper he can get too. Thank you every one for your input!! |

I would never board Jackson -- just doesn't have the personality for it. And I have very few people I trust with him. I would have by far been the most comfortable with someone coming and staying even if they were gone all day for work. |
