Neutering
 

Ok y'all, Joey turned 7 months old on the first of September. He is scheduled to be neutered on the 9th (Friday). I had mostly girl dogs growing up and my first dog which was Callie is a girl so I have mostly dealt with spayes. We had one boy dog when I was growing up but I was 12 and don't remember much about it and when my parents rescued Sammy he was already fixed. Callie came home the night of her spay and did nothing but sleep no wanting to eat or anything and stayed pretty calm when she was healing. I'm not really sure what to expect with a neuter. Joey has separation anxiety and I'm not sure if it's because I got him so young or because he was passed around to multiple homes before I got him or both. He has never been left alone and even if I leave and he is staying home with another family member he screams at the door for like 15 minutes. I'm scared to leave him at the vet. He is very much a mommas boy. Every time he got a puppy shot he would scream and he can be a little bit of a drama queen. He is the smallest dog I have had so far, he is 8 pounds but tall and skinny. I just worry about him. He got his blood work done last week and it came back great and I bought a soft cone for him. Do I need anything else? He is VERY active so not sure I'm going to be able to keep him calm. Any tips or advice I need to know?

My little man did great! He stayed at the vet for 24 hours, that was a year to me. Came home like nothing ever happened. Tried to keep him from being a wild little puppy, but that didn't work out too well. He didn't ware a cone and he never bothered his stiches.
Just keep an eye on him. Try not to be extra worried cause he will pick up on your energy and will be that drama king.

I agree our Rocky knew something was up when we were taking him to the vet to get fixed and he was crying the whole time. That day that he came home he was stoned from the anesthesia for the rest of the day/night, was very hungry when he got home, threw up 3 times through out the night. Would just stand there and not react to anything when he got home. But the next day he was all better. We also have a tough time with keeping him from jumping on the couch and being too active. He hates his cone but has gotten used to it and is dealing with it well. So don't worry your pup will bounce back very quickly. Good luck

Our vet does spaying and neutering first appnts in morning. So, Barney immediately went in, had his snip, snip and slept peacefully until I picked him up. He didn't even have a chance to do his crate screaming.

As far as healing, he was calm/drugged day one. But after that, he was his normal self. We tried to keep him calm, but you can't keep a good man down, even if you steal his nuts.

Peanut was neutered first thing in the morning and I was able to pick him up that afternoon. He was not very active that afternoon and the vet said not to feed him food until the next morning to prevent vomiting. (Just allow water}. The next morning he acted like he felt fine and ate his regular meal. He never bothered his stitches and we didn't use a cone. He did have pain meds for 3 days which my vet offered as an option. He normally is the one of my 3 that is very sensitive but he did great with the neutering. Hope all goes well with your little guy and he's back to his normal self in no time.

I know what you mean about worrying about separation anxiety. I worry about Teddy that way when it comes to the vet, but he does okay. Joey will do great and be back home snuggling with you and Callie before you know it. :)

Max tried to jump in the first 24 hours and found out it didn't feel very good. Wasn't too hard after that to keep him somewhat calm. We played calm fetch and tug-o-war, and I carried him on his walking route for about 10 days. No bath for 2 weeks.

From my experience the neuter surgery has a significantly lesser post-surgery effect. When Scottie was neutered, he was groggy the day of, but pretty much back to normal the next day. When Casie was spayed, she was out cold the day of, and somewhat back to normal the next day.

Jackson has such separation anxiety from me, even at a young age. God it seems like so long ago he was neutered. He's almost 8 now. But I recall him being super groggy when I picked him up. I had dropped him off early like 8am and got to to pick him up by like 1pm. By the next day he was more back to himself. I never had to use a cone or anything; just kept a close eye but I don't recall him messing with his stitches too much. I HATE having to drop him off anywhere for anything. He has such anxiety - it breaks my heart.
