Anyone had coat issues after anaesthetic 1 Attachment(s) Hi, I have a little Chorkie called Lottie She has a shortish coat 1 to 2 inches that molts. When I had her spayed last may she dropped all her coat. It started to grow back very slowly. She had to have an x ray end of January and by the end of march she had lost 90 percent of it. Its taken ages to get back to what it was. I use a good cold pressed kibble called Gentle and add a oil. What I wondered is this is down to the anaesthetic or is this going to be a regular occurrence because she is a cross breed. Any one else had this problem ? I know she is a mutt and is not going to grow flowing locks lol I would just like her to keep what she has got without losing it every 6 months:) She will be 2 November 23 rd |
Lottie is adorable! She looks like a sweetheart. I've heard of anesthesia having an impact on human hair, so it is possible. My boys have never shown any changes though. Since you are already feeding a good diet with oil, you could look to the outside and try different hair products. A good shampoo and conditioner can be helpful. No breed should lose 90% of coat at any time. If that happens again, I would consider skin issues or an underlying health problem. |
Thank you for your reply Lottie is just the sweetest little dog, she is my world When I say losing her coat I mean the guard hairs ( the longer hair) she is left with just her undercoat and a few scattered long strands. She has taken a double coat from her mum who was a chihuahua. I have been using Groomers royal shampoo with a spray conditioner. I think her coat is probably the longest its ever been now. Just hope she keeps it ! So if it happens again do you think she has a problem ? Or is it a result of being a cross breed ? |

Such a doll! I understand now, having a double or undercoat because of the Chihuahua genes. Seasonal shedding would be normal then, and probably greater chance of hair breakage with the combination of genes. Look at the bright side. She is adorable and really pulls off the short hair style well. Highlights those sweet eyes and adorable nose. :) |

1 Attachment(s) Thank you every one :) Im hoping it was a reaction to the anaesthetic as I really like her scruffy look. Guess time will tell. I just found this what I took after she blew her coat in spring, you can see the long strands, she looked so strange its taken 5 months to regrow. |
Anytime a dog loses significant hair, you should test for thyroid issues and for Cushings. No, I don't think it has anything at all to do w/ anesthesia. |
Vet wasn't concerned about her blowing her coat as it grew back and she is healthy weight and has loads of energy. He did mention it could be allergies and as it happened both times after procedures made me think about anaesthetics. If it happens again ill take her back again for a second opinion. |
Oh my goodness, what a cutie pie she is!! When you say she lost her coat, did she lose it and be bald?? Or did she just lose some of the longer hair? I had a yorkie/chi foster who had short hair interspersed with long hair and it often looked wispy. I usually just kept it clipped short as it looked neater to me. If she is actually losing hair as in going bald, I would definitely be thinking of something like Cushings....or Alopecia X which is also known as Pseudo Cushings. I had a foster pup with that.
