Puppy food RC Acana or Orijen Been reading A LOT about their kibbles - very confusing the more you get into actually:rolleyes: Which is the best out of the list (only ones available that are "better" from the range of pet food availability around here): 1 RoyalCanin Yorkie Junior 2 Acana puppy 3 Orijen puppy P.S. Anyone tried Nootie Vanilla pea lol |
I'd go with a higher protein diet, rather than a higher carb diet - it's way more species appropriate. So, either Orijen or Acana. Or better yet, get Natures Logic Venison... |
I love acana and so do my dogs-it is an excellent food...but if my girl could handle higher protein, I would've gone with orijen. |
No Nature's Logic, no Blue buffalo etc where I live and shipping is ridiculous. But THANK GOD Acana is available (also Orijen) Acana Lamb and apple sounds good :p Is it possible to give a puppy the lamb and apple, maybe crush the kibbles smaller or just stick with the "puppy small breeds" and switch to lamb and apple later? Sorry for my silly questions. |
The lamb n apple is perfect!!! That's what my baby boy is on! He's a puppy. That's why I started acana bc its for all life stages. When I first started him on acana- I just soaked it but now I don't anymore- how old is your pup? How big? My girl is fully grown but smaller mouth and weight then my pup- they both love! The lamb n apple is slightly smaller then their free range poultry for some reason and my two just think it's delish. |

I will get the Lamp and Apple one, THANK YOU so much. I know lamb is lighter on the tummy too so appropriate for sensitive ones. For snacks/treats, I seem to be really paranoid about what's inside them so I guess I'll be cooking in the kitchen lol |

Every dog is different. Many dogs thrive on RC, many on Acana, etc. Orijen, I find, tends to be rich for a lot of dogs - but again... many do fantastic on it. I've fed Acana for going on 7 years now primarily. I've switched and rotated between other brands many times but come back to Acana (even tho I'm annoyed with their recent changes, what can ya do?) but my boy still seems to do the best on the brand IMO. We mostly rotate between the Singles flavors - duck and lamb. But I'll also feed the Grasslands formula as well as the Prairie one. |
Seems acana is one of the popular ones now... :p |
for treats, I feel them lamb lung :) no added ingredients at all and easily broken into small pieces. they love! |

Thanks for sharing treats too! Will look into it. Just saw this brand called " Celtic Connections " ... Hmmmm :p I'm getting crossed eyed looking for "the right" kibble! |
I've fed both Acana and Orijen! For some reason Scottie started turning his nose away from Acana after a while, which is why I switched to Orijen - he likes his high protein! For snacks, Orijen also has these freeze-dried patty meals that I used as treats. I figured that because it's kind of expensive to feed as meal on a daily basis, but freeze-dried meals are actually good for dogs and tastier than kibble, it made for a really good treat! Whenever they got sick, I used these freeze-dried patties mixed with oatmeal so that it was easier on their stomach during recovery. I also fed the dehydrated lamb lungs (by Merricks) as treats :) |

I am super glad you mentioned the frozen stuff. I never heard of it before but Orijen has the treats called frozen red and other flavs. I don't even know what it means "frozen", like you get it frozen? Or you freeze it? |

The dehydrated lamb lungs worked for my little one who had stomach issues, but what works for one may not work for another. I would highly recommend that whatever treats you choose whether dog treat or carrots to only give it in moderation. If puppy, I'd give like a pinch a day to make sure nothing goes wrong. But always, never too much. One pet store lady actually made fun of me because she saw how little of the treats I was giving. She teased that I was being stingy for giving 'lint-sized' pieces :D But trust me. You want to prevent puppy/dog diarrhea whenever possible. Sometimes it'll be a day, sometimes it could last a week - then it's really scary :eek::eek:!! For the freeze-dried stuff, I'd stay away from the ones labelled as 'treat's. Treats often contain a higher liver, because dogs love the smell and taste of liver. Given too much liver will cause loose stools and get them sick (unless you're lucky enough to get a rare Yorkie with an iron stomach). Stick to the dinner patties, if it's available where you live. Basically the freeze-dried stuff is raw food processed in a way that was never cooked. You'll have to Google it for a better description :) But feeding raw is a relatively new concept where many dog nutritionists believe is better for dogs. It's expensive in the long run, so I stick with kibble. |

Maybe i'll do the kibble as free feed but also do home cooked food as meals/treats. I am SO impressed how knowledgeable this place is. Not only does this help everyones little ones on all aspects you can imagine but also truly teaches how to be the best yorkie parent! It can be overwhelming sometimes :p |
