Stair Anxiety We moved into a 2 floor place about a month ago and in the last few days my yorkie has all of sudden become anxious when climbing stairs. She usually makes it to the first landing then stops. She cries till someone picks her up, occasionally she can be enticed to come up the from the landing, but other times she completely refuses. At first I thought she was just acting like the diva that she is, but now I'm beginning to wonder if something might be wrong. She is 6yrs old so I'm not sure arthritis is the deal. The stairs are wooden and so perhaps they are slick and that has made her anxious. Any clues to what may be wrong would be appreciated. |
My late yorkie didn't do stairs either. He would stand at the bottom till someone picked him up, and stand at the top for someone to carry him down. He did this until his passing at 7 years old. Now our new baby won't stay off the stairs, up & down all day. Go figure. |
Max and Sasha will both run up and down the stairs to the 2nd floor but neither one will go down the stairs into the basement. The stairs are the same height and angle. When I go into the basement they will both stand at the top and look down until I come back up but will not come down. Never understood why but I am not complaining because the basement is not dog proofed. |
aww.. poor baby! My Scottie has no issues going up and down stairs that are carpeted. When my mom moved homes and her staircases were wooden, he was scared. I think...it's because it's slippery? I figure it's probably for the better so he doesn't hurt himself. Casie, doesn't do any stairs. Her little tiny legs are too short. I'm afraid she'd just tumble down the stairs! |
How high/deep are your stairs/each tread? Perhaps she feels overwhelmed? I've seen pictures of ppl incorporating a narrow ramp for their pups b/c they're old and is having joint issues. If your stairs don't have any anti slip tread covers or something similar. |
I think I'd prefer Piper not go up and down wooden stairs as there are a lot of ways she could get hurt. If it were me, I'd just carry the little one up and down steps and be glad she's safely in my arms! |
It really could be that the stairs are too slippery and or maybe to steep, Chloe will go up short sets of stairs, but not steep sets and only ones that have carpet or good grip. I usually just carry her up and down, because I figure she not to kean on them, and better safe than sorry. |
Okay, bad, bad Mayzoo!! Now I simply cannot get the picture of a yorkie sitting in a stair lift chair using their paw on a tiny joy stick to **g l i d e** slowly up and down the stairs by themselves. Independent little cus that Mario is, I can actually visualize him smugly doing this some day  :D Ya know, when yorkie sized stair lift chairs become available LOL https://www.google.com/search?q=stai...b1pKFin53sM%3A |
Ohhh, bad, baaad, MAYZOO!!! You're such a meatball and now, I, too have your same vision---and it's hilarious! The paw on the stick sloooowwllly gliding...Oh my, this is too much laughter for this hour of the morning! |
My little furbaby goes up and down our stairs... of course it is carpeted... but she has no problems. |
Ally has slipped off the furniture and the stairs and has gone into shock. Please be careful! I thought I had lost her when she first fell off the couch. |
Toby will not go down the basement steps but will go up. At times when he wants to play and we won't play with him he will take one of his balls and throw it down the basement steps. He then barks at it until one of us fetches the ball for him and plays with him a while. |
