Not sleeping
 
I'm a working woman and have a 7 month old Yorkie poo. Lately he won't sleep thru the night. I think he sleeps a lot while I'm at work. I've gotten interactive toys but he doesn't play while I'm gone . I run him ragged after I get home but he still gets up and whines to go out. Help!

At 7mths old, he likely can't go thru the night without having to potty - so I'm not surprised. Many dogs have to go in the night, just like a lot of humans. I wouldn't pull up the water *too* soon, but you could try pulling any water up about 3 hours prior to bedtime. Have you tried that yet? Does he maybe cry just bc he wants to be w/ you...?

Because of the heat I have been loathe to remove his water bowl. He was sleeping thru the night prior to the last couple of weeks. Also he does sleep with me so it's not a separation thing. Thanks for posting!

My husband I both work as well, and our son is going into tenth grade. Our babies are home from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Mon. Tues. Thurs. and Fri.) by themselves (my husband goes home for lunch every day and checks on them). We do not have your problem though. Maybe because there are two they play together during the day. They play when I get home until we go to bed at 10:30 or 11:00. We are a little worried, because our baby (Perseus) has had my son home with him all summer. We're not sure how he'll adjust to him going to school. I guess we'll find out, because my son starts school August 3. My son was gone to band camp for a week, but my husband was on vacation. Crossing my fingers for next week!!! I have no suggestion for you since you run him ragged. The water suggestion might work, but I certainly understand the heat. We live in swampy Mississippi, so I wouldn't want to take water from my boys either. Best wishes to you -- I hope you find a solution.

At his age especially, a consistent routine will be very helpful. You have a baby there...lots of joy, lots of patience. He'll quickly figure out how things work; what happens when and all that and will eventually settle down--even at bedtime. Insofar as this recent bout of 'insomnia' maybe he's uncomfortable because of heat (Be very careful that he doesn't over-do with running around, etc. You have to limit his exercise (because he won't) to ensure he doesn't get heat stroke. In extreme hot temperatures, veterinarians suggest no more than 20 minutes outside once in the morning and again in cool of the evening. Also, about an hour before calling it a night, try to keep him still and quiet...cuz once revved-up, it's not easy for puppies to suddenly stop! I'll bet he's one precious, fun, silly little handful, yes?!

That is too funny because my two walk into the garage, feel the heat there (with a closed door), and go right back inside. They HATE the heat. In the winter, although we don't have much of one here, Zeusy will go right out and loves the cool/cold. It snowed (a dusting) here two years go when he was a puppy (which is an absolute rare occasion), and we couldn't get him inside. We had to drag him whining inside. I am the same way -- love the cold. They, like me, should have been born somewhere besides the south. We have been over 90 degrees with heat indices over 100 for about a month. Absolutely miserable! My teeth sweat!

We must be members of the same tribe cuz you're speaking my lingo, baby!! Summer heat and that sunny stuff makes me absolutely wilt and I spend all my time inside--Piper thinks she likes hot, until she's gone a distance and then starts giving me accusatory looks over her shoulder. However, as soon as the weather gets blustery, we're outa here like a shot!! Give me cold, windy, gray, snowy days and I'm so happy!
