Coyotes on the prowl So had an unnerving experience today. We live out in the country - lots of farm land, horses, cattle, etc as well as deer, raccoons, 'possums, etc. So there is a handy food source for predators - lots of coyotes and hearing them at night is kinda spooky. This afternoon walking to the mail box I saw one trotting along just inside the fence line across the street. It was like he following the road, but just inside the fence line. He/she stopped, looked at me, and continued trotting along like he owned the place! Me, being me, took off down the road just to see if I could spot him again, but no go. Snapped a pic when I first saw him, but I was too far away and you can't see him. This coyote was HUGE! and he looked very healthy and well fed -- like a gianormous light colored, lean and muscular german shepherd. Please be extra careful with your babies and keep them safe from predators. |

Very scary! People in urban, developed areas should be vigilant too. Last summer, coyotes were caught on camera in Chicago running down Addison Street in front of Wrigley Field. They are everywhere. We saw one in our neighborhood this year. He was trotting down the street in the early morning hours. |
Lots of small dogs and cats have been disappearing in a town near Seattle. A few disappearances were verified to be coyotes grabbing them. Owners witnessed the snatching of their pets, some coyotes jumped fences to get to the pets. Finally, I think it was a federal agency that came in and killed one of the coyotes. There are still lots more, near daily reported sightings of the coyotes. Seems they are in every state, have them here also. 5 years ago, 4AM going to work, one trotted in front of my car, sorry to say I hit it due to car tailgating me. We also have a lot of hybrids that hang out in my area. Cody is NEVER left outside without my eyes GLUED on him. Everyone be very careful. Wanted to add, even in The Bronx, NY Van Cortland park they have been spotted in small packs. |
We had a video of one running across our front lawn last summer. This town is not in the woods nor city but close to the seashore. Scarey! |
If, that was a coy wolf they've been thriving in urban areas. |

Last year the local news reported coyote sightings within city limits; with continuing drought all types of wild animals were seeking food and water and of course, this included coyotes. One of the scarier warnings stated that coyotes were known to observe a residence for several days, learn the routine of the occupants and then lay-in-wait--ready to grab cat or dog the second that pet walked outside! So it would seem prudent for those who have had coyote sightings, to keep your pet inside for an extra minute while you check the immediate area for these determined predators (although I think most of us go in and out with our little ones, not matter what...) |

I live in a large urban area. My local park has a group of coyotes. There are warning signs posted. We had a close encounter with my very large brt years ago now. But three coyotes were circling where we were training in the field. Thankfully magic was facing me and the coyotes were quiet. I hit the panic button on, my car and we returned safely. I would not have wanted magic to face off against three! So they are here in Toronto Canada for sure. I never walk my wee one in the park alone. |
I have also seen coyotes in urban cities. There are warning signs everywhere. One time, there were two coyotes trotting side-by-side down a street in our city-residential neighbourhood. Another time, there was one sneaking up behind my fiance on the sidewalk as he was walking Scottie. Apparently, the coyote was 'playing' redlight-greenlight, where each time they stopped and turned around to look for it, it had gotten closer. But each time he turned around to look at it, the coyote would pretend to walk away. So fiance panicked and quickly picked Scottie up (less than 1 years at the time). It got to the point where they had to do a stare-off. And walked backwards towards home until the coyote stopped following him. This coyote was super skinny - he was starving! We read up on it and some tips were to shine a bright light at it, make noises, and do not ever turn your back on the coyote. |
Wow, that is really, really scary! Thanks for tips if ever facing situation like your the one your fiancé was in...(he's pretty smart and brave, yes?!). Though I hope never to be in any wild animal situation, it's always good to have knowledge in do's and don'ts! |
