Have anxious yorkie poo...would anot her help? Hello! We have a 9 year old yorkie poo (she's 75% yorkie and 25% poodle but she looks and acts like a full yorkie. ) She is the poster dog for high anxiety. Any small noise make her jump, shake or bark. She's not a fan of small children but is fine with most adults once she feels brave enough to meet them. She is great with friends and family she knows. She is very attached to me. Is definitely more my dog than a family dog. She's super sweet and loves to snuggle. And gives lots of kisses! She's *ok* with other dogs sometimes. Totally depends on the dog. She is tolerant to an extent but if the other dog is demanding and more dominant, she'll snap and growl at them. Yet, if she (Casey, our yorkie poo) instigates play, she's better. We are considering getting a cockapoo puppy. For a few years now, I have wondered if getting a puppy would be good for Casey and her anxiety. She doesn't have separation anxiety...just general nervous anxiety. What are you all's thoughts??? Would another dog be too much for her or do you think it would make her even more anxious and nervous? Feel free to ask me anything! I need advice! Thanks!!! |
It's soooo hard to predict bc you just never know how a dog will react any one individual dog. My guess is that she'll probably not want to be much involved w/ another dog and may be jealous of it...but that the pair would find a way to make it work (they almost always do). |
Thanks for your thoughts. I'm still just not sure what to do. We took Casey with us to visit with the puppies and she wanted nothing to do with them but was fine with the mom dog, which is a huge standard poodle. Her reaction to the puppies was actually funny...she refused to make eye contact with them. But she never growled nor was she aggressive towards them. I know it would be a huge adjustment for her, soooo, still thinking about it. We'll see...:) |
Anxious Casey I think the majority of dogs would not want to mess with a puppy, they are just too playful and I don't think they know what to think of puppies, especially an older dog. Might want to consider checking her out around with older dogs as you said she was ok with the standard poodle. |
There are medications for anxiety for dogs. Have you discussed that with your vet? |
Yes, I have talked extensively with the vet about her anxiety but he has not put her on any medication. I have tried some all natural type anxiety treats but haven't noticed much change. She's been this way since about the age of 1. One reason I have thought about getting another dog as a puppy is to give her a chance to "nurture" something on her own. She's funny because if another dog is around and she knows we are watching, she is more annoyed by the dog. But, if act like we aren't watching, she will sometimes initiate the play with the dog. So, she is not totally anti- other dogs. It just depends on the dog. As for her anxiety, it is just a part of who she is. And she is so stinking cute! I apologize if I'm rambling... |
