Black coloured yorkies
 
Hi, just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on black coloured yorkies .

All black, head to tail? That would be a mixed breed as that is not a standard color for Yorkies.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. It's supposed to be new color for yorkies listed under exotic coloured yorkies.

I would avoid any breeder claiming this because they are full of baloney, so I wouldn't trust them to be breeding healthy pups. :)

All black? Not a full yorkie at all. Yorkie puppies are mostly black, but have brown above the eyes, muzzle and paws. The black fades as they age. Any breeder who claims these off colors are rare and/or charing more are full of BS. Run away and fast!

Yes, I just find it interesting, all the new colours coming out for yorkies. Parti, biewer,Merle ..if these are mixed breeds how they registering them , just curious

My mixed breed (yorkie chihuahua) is black all over and very yorkie looking. May be they are duping people with these.

Our Kyra has stayed mostly black but she does have gold markings. I would be leary of an all black one being pure.

Parti and Biewer are not new. I haven't kept up with where Parti and Biewers stand with AKC. There are many threads here discussing Partis and Biewers.

All I know is that the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America that sets the breed standard that applies to conformation exhibition (dog shows) recognizes only "traditional" color Yorkies.

All other colors are considered "faults" or are the result of mixing breeds.

"Designer dogs" is strictly a marketing term used to convince unsuspecting buyers that a dog is rare, and to falsely justify inflated prices.

After seeing the pics that you linked, mimimomo, I skimmed a few threads on other sites of people who said they had black Morkies.

I can't figure out the genetics since Maltese are white, not black. I've met Morkies, and they were white. Where would they get the gene(s) for black fur/hair?

Can someone clue me in?

I would guess all of the colors other than white come from the Yorkie genes. How that gets translated to mostly black, is beyond my understanding of coat color genetics. My eyes start to glaze over when I read about genes, alleles, phenotypes, and so on. :D

Thank you, Maximo. That makes sense at a high level to me, too.

I totally understand... The complexity of genes, etc., is like math to me.

Here are my two adopted 9 month old Morkies. They are both from the same litter. I got to speak to their foster mom and told me that their birthday is Oct. 17th.

With selective breeding, you can probably create just about any color. Just breed darker and darker yorkies together. NOT A FAN.

I'm a dinosaur and a thousand years ago grew up on a dairy farm. When one of our dogs had puppies, those pups were all kinds of cute, with all kinds of 'dads.' And those puppies were described as Heinz 57 Variety, mutts, etc; we were lucky to give 'em away. Who knew we were raising 'designer' dogs in our barn?!?!!

Lol! Where I am from that is what I remember too. Lots of free puppies and kittens...not designer dogs, mutts. Cute mutts. But mutts none the less.

Put a link to an article about Merle coloring since it was mentioned, I have read about it before and thought the auditory/vision issues that show up with Merle breedings were actually fascinating. I haven't heard of 'Merle yorkies' yet and I hope I don't. I really appreciate that we have a breed with traits I can for the most part depend on. I am grateful for our breed and I hope to keep its integrity and improve on its faults.

I'm a Biewer breeder but I don't understand all the colors of the Yorkies. I understand Parti but gold Yorkies, ocean pearl Yorkies, etc.

Ex New Yorker here "Da Bronx" :thumbup: Heinz 57 is what mix dogs were called, today they are designer dogs, like USED cars are now "pre owned" cars lol.
