Should I get male or female I recently lost my yorkie, Charley, of 15 yr 8 mo. Best dog ever! I have a 6 year old female yorkie and want to get a puppy. I really wanted to get a female to avoid the marking thing and also just have a thing about getting a male because Charley was boy, only male I've ever had. I guess I feel less like I'm replacing him if I get a female. Silly, I guess but how I feel. BUT I keep hearing that I should get a male since I already have a female because they'll get along better. Does anyone have an opinion or experience with this? I know it's going to depend on the dog but if it's very common for 2 females to not get along, I'd get a male. Also, I am looking for a puppy in Virginia, I'm in Augusta county if anyone knows of breeder that has a yorkie - traditional color or blond. I don't want one that will be under 3 lb, too tiny for me. I'm sorry for your loss of Charley. For the gender of the new puppy, I would keep an open mind and simply look for the best puppy, female or male. Kind of let the dog choose you. I originally was looking for a female when my first boy chose me. :) I have 2 very strong males and they get along beautifully. It really does depend on the individual dogs. I don't think there are any rules when it comes to a perfect combination. Neither of my boys marks in the house. Outdoors, they are leg lifters, but I could have discouraged that. I don't think it's silly for you to feel the way you do after losing your furbaby. And before deciding on male/female, maybe it's best to find a good reputable breeder first. I think a good breeder will be able to "match" you with a right puppy. As for marking.. my boy only marks outside. Zoey was the one that would mark inside but that's been fixed. :) |
I agree, think about the feedback from your reputable breeder on what puppy may best suit your family. |
I haven't experience this yet, but some say that girl-girl is not the best combination, and that girl-boy is best, boy-boy is okay too. Despite what the book says, there's always exceptions. Find a good breeder first and like everyone else suggested, let the puppy find you. :) |
I had a pack of 3 females, all 3 years apart, never a growl or snarl between them, beautiful personalities, maybe I was just lucky. Then my 2 older ones passed away 6 months apart, the baby who was then 6 yo grieved their loss for 7 months, so off I go to get her a buddy. Another female, it was LOVE at first sight for my 6 yo. They were inseparable, did everything together, even slept in the same doggie bed. Again, maybe I was just lucky. This is my experience with all female yorkies. |
I heard it depends on your girls personality-if she is very assertive, get a very docile pup if you can find one (lol). I have heard sometimes girls and girls can be tough, so I went with a boy for my girl. They are BFFs and beyond cute together. Good luck with whatever you decide! |
