What size is my Yorkie? Hi, Hoping someone can help here - my little one is nearly 6 yrs old and weighs 5lbs. People ask me if she's a miniature or a tea cup - I thought she was the small end of standard but then I see some whoppers and wonder!! |
The standard is not to exceed 7 pounds so she would fall into standard. There really is no such thing as a miniature or teacup those terms were made up by bad breeders to make money. |
Geez, all I know is she is hugely cute!! Love her little tossely, blonde hair! |

There is no size class for a Yorkshire Terrier. They do have a preferred standard which anyone can look up. Terms such as "teacup" come from breeders trying to sell non standard pups. Usually many times they end up being bigger or sicker than advertised. Your dog is within the official standard weight range for Yorkies. You can either try to educate people who ask or just tell them that your dog is a standard Yorkie size. The slang terms for the different sizes of Yorkies have become so prevalent that it is hard to convince some people of the truth. |

I've had people call Lu a teacup but she's around the 6lb - 6.5lb mark (I haven't weighed her in a little while). She's tiny around other dogs yes (like Labradors), but I know she's around the average weight for a Yorkie. Though with the amount of people who keep saying miniature or teacup, even I started to doubt that she was a normal Yorkie size! From my understanding, teacup Yorkies are Yorkies that are 4lbs or less when they are fully grown. I might need correcting there but that's what I've heard :) Your little girl is adorable :) |
All my yorkie (5 in total) weight ranged from 9 lbs to 17 lbs lol, I had strangers insisting my 17 lb girl was a silky lol, what ever. There is one official size which is 5 to7 lbs, which is called STANDARD. TEACUP, is a ploy word for bad breeders that breed for the smaller dog and charge big bucks, what you usually end up getting is a sick dog down the road with generic issues. Your baby falls right in line with the STANDARD size of yorkies weight. My rescue boy weighs in at 12 lbs, to me he is TINY compared to my 17 years of living with my now passed 17 lb girl. Ignore the uneducated ones, I do. Due to bad breading yorkies come in all sizes, if anyone wants a STANDARD size yorkie that will have few to no generic diseases they must search for the breeder that breeds to BETTER the BREED. |

The Yorkie is a toy breed. The standard of this toy breed is anything less than 7 pounds. A Yorkie can be 3 pounds or 23 pounds and it would be a Yorkie. No miniature* no teacup * no micro * no teaspoon * no anything other than a Yorkie. |
