Singleton After making the difficult decision to help our precious Kona get to the rainbow bridge in early December, we decided we were ready for another. Here's my concern - we have an adorable little 15 week (tomorrow) puppy. We have had her for 2 weeks. Apparently the mom had 2 pups but one died, making our little Dixie a "singleton". Has anyone had any experience with this? I have been reading on the Internet (probably not the best thing to do), and I am a little worried about what to expect. She had both her parents as well as a big dog around before we picked her up. |
I got Max when he was 13 weeks old, and he was the only one in his litter. The only things I can think of to look out for are issues with biting and socialization. I've read that puppies learn how hard is acceptable to play bite by doing this with siblings. Siblings will let them know when bites are too hard. It hasn't been a huge issue, we've just had to be really mindful of letting Max know when the play biting is too much. He also was initially very scared of other dogs and people. We've been socializing him a lot since he got all of his shots, and he's doing much better. Now he has to meet every dog we pass! |

I can sympathize! Oh man, we've tried so many things, I'm not sure what actually worked. We say "ouch!" loudly, we ignore him and stop playing, we give him many other toys and things to chew on as a diversion, and he's even been in a time-out. The one thing I tried that absolutely did not work was giving him a treat after he stopped biting. Made him bite again to earn another reward. I really don't know how much of this issue was singleton syndrome and how much was just teething, but he's almost 8 months and is so much better. |
