Bella and her cough I am brand-new to the Yorky community. I got my eight week old Yorky puppy now named Bella last Tuesday weighing in at 1.6lbs. I Already love her but very concerned because she has developed a cough and it seems to continually be getting worse. She doesn't act like she feels bad. She is still very active I took her to the vet for a wellness check and he put her on an anabiotic which hasn't seem to help yesterday I called him back and he told me I could give her .3 mL of Benadryl but that hasn't seem to help either. How often can I give her the Benadryl? Do you have any other suggestions ? |
oh she is very small, how old is she? Did you contact the breeder? How long did you have her when she started coughing? Did the vet say kennel cough or something else? |
Hi and welcome. I hope you take this seriously bc this little pup shouldn't even be away from his Momma and littermates yet - he should be with them until at least 12 weeks. So, I'd be suspect of the ethics of that breeder. As for the cough - in puppies this can swiftly progress to pneumonia and they can/will die if left untreated. This pup needs the right antibiotic, a cough syrup, etc in order to deal with this. And unforch, btw, kennel cough can last for MONTHS in puppies. In the meantime also, STAY AWAY from getting the kennel cough vaccine - which is likely how/why he got this in the first place. |
She is 9 weeks. I should have been alerted when I didn't see a mom anywhere in the area. It was at a private home but the breeder was highly recommended. Thanks for your reply. |

But maybe the good thing for you is that you did have good word of mouth, ya know? That's something. It is odd though that you didn't see Mom/Dad...she didn't mention them at all...? Best of luck w/ your kiddo :). I think as long as you stay on top of (high alert!) his young, vulnerable age and the potential to go downhill fast, you'll be okay. Just be sure you feel GOOD about your vet, make sure you trust them and have a good gut feeling....if you don't have that, believe me, you don't want. |
Aww poor little baby. I agree 8-9 weeks is really young. Don't let her out of your site. Stay on top of Vet visits. Best wishes |
Oh poor sweet little baby :( I'm so sorry to hear that is your guys start together! As Ann said, unfortunately a lot of us yorkie lovers do start out getting our pups like that. It may be wise to get a second opinion. Damage can be done if the cough persists. I know typically with kennel cough they use robitussin (no added ingredients) to soothe the cough while they treat with antibiotics but your lady sure is little to be dosing. Perhaps you could call the office who saw her and inquire about that? Watch to make sure she is eating and drinking through this ordeal and perhaps include a probiotic while she is on antibiotics to make sure your next trouble isn't diahrea and dehydration. Glad you are out seeking support and the best start for your little pup. Welcome to yorkie talk! :yorkieg: |
Poor little baby! Hope he feels better soon. Pray for her fast recovery. |
I would take her to see the vet, as it could be anything from Bordatella (Kennel Cough) to pneumonia. I hope she is feeling better. Quote:

Our first pup, Bella had a hacking cough when we first got her. Luckily, with a few rounds of meds, it cleared up over time. Taking her to the vet was a good first step. Just stay on top of it! |
Is this wee one any better today...? |
