Eye care for drainage issues Hello I have a four year old yorkie named Sasha. When I first got her this past year, she had a bad build up of drainage from her eyes. It was thick and hard. I took her to the vet for her regular checkup and mentioned this problem. He prescribed eye drops. That did not seem to fix the problem. I got online and ordered miracle eyes, again it didn't help. I have also tried angel eyes with no relief. I clean them with eye pads each night. My groomer did remove the original guck, but now it has returned. I feel horrible that it is so thick again. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I also tried distilled water only for awhile. Next stop will either be vet again or calling groomer for ideas. Thanks |
Many dogs have this issue and it becomes an issue of maintenance...where every day or 2, you have to take a wet, warm cotton ball and clean the eyes. Right now the pollens are just horrendous, so this could easily be due to allergies. Does she chew or lick her paws? wylies mom-I just saw a youtube video from stasis the zhu on colloidal silver, do you have any opinion on that? |
I agree with Wylie's Mom that it is often a matter of daily maintenance for many Yorkies. We use wet cotton balls daily to clean the corners of the eyes, followed by a flea comb to separate the hair and really clean the area. If you just wipe downward and never separate the hairs, junk builds up and leads to stains. I like Tropiclean Spa Fresh facial cleaner with tear stain remover. We use it at bath time. It cleans dirty faces thoroughly, yet rinses out easily and is gentle on my boy's sensitive eyes. Quote:
It's been awhile since I have read about it, but I recall some sources voicing concern that consistent use of colloidal silver might lead to a resistance to antibiotics. |
Ok thanks - how do you use the spa for face in between baths? What is the process? Thanks |

Max went through a period of eye problems, corneal ulcers, so I do not like to risk anything near his eyes unless I can rinse his head thoroughly. |
Thanks so much for the replies regarding Sasha's eye drainage issues. The key no one had explained before is to comb the area also. I had been using the pads to clean them but that wasn't enough. I appreciate the ones who took the time to response. |

Because Scottie is so gross, sniffing everything all the time, I use it in between baths on his face. In the bathtub, I rub it into his face/whiskers and kind of make it into a Mario stache, leave it in while I wash his feet from our walk, and then rinse his face several times by pouring a small container of water over his muzzle while avoiding his nose. |
Espree makes a nice facial wash as well- I like the plum perfect scent. We just snuggle Lilah up in a towel and I use my fingers to massage water into her beard and moustache and around her eye area. Then I massage the facial wash in and rinse it the same way- just for kind of a long time because I want to make sure it is out. The little moustache comb part is so important, I agree. We definitely face wash between baths and I wish we did every day! Maltese obsession has some super cute videos- she ties a little head scarf on her ladies for face washing time- toooo cute! |
Cali has been having a terrible allergy season. The first eye drops did not help the "white mucusy kunk" but to,say the vet put her on neomycin & polymyxin B & dexamethethasone opthlmic suspension. I had been looking for something with the dexamethasone as nothing else has helped! |
