Home alone I have a 3.5lb (1.6 kg) Yorkshire Terrier who is 3 and a half years old. Her name is Tinky. We are in love :p When I had Tinky she was 6 months old with a slight hypoglycaemia. When I say slight I mean she was having attack once in every couple months. This diminished over the years. Actually I might say she didnt have an episode this last year. Thank God. Now this is my question: Since she was so small and had hypoglycaemia I never left her at home or any where alone. There is a lady working in my house so if I had to go somewhere she was never ever alone. But this year both of my children are going away. So I don't need a staying at home helper. That is why I am ending the helper's job this September. Now since Tinky has never been alone since I took her what should I do. I am scared that what if she has an hypoglycaemia attack because she gets stressed. The vet says I should start leaving her for short times and prolong the time gradually. I should keep the radio or the TV on and everytime I come back I should give her treats. But I am still scared! What are your suggestions? Any similar experiences? Thank you |
Since she is an adult, it'd be pretty rare for a hypo episode - so I'm glad you haven't seen one in a year now. That's great :). I agree w/ your vet...just leave her alone, increasing times as you go, gradually. There are different things that may be calming or helpful: pheromone plug-ins or collar, aromatherapy (balms you put on their ears/head or sprays etc), Rescue Remedy. There are even dog DVDs you can buy that play stuff that is supposed to be engaging and soothing to dogs...there is supposed to be one that is super good, but can't recall the name. You can also rub a small bandana on yourself, and then tie it around her so your smell is close to her. Keep her in a smaller, secure area rather than allowing her to roam the house. Also, what about a webcam so you can keep an eye on her...? |
Good advise has been given. I will just add that I rarely leave my dog. It when I do I use the app PRESENCE and use an old cell phone as a camera. Check it out. There are other camera systems as well. |

You download the Presence app to your old phone and your current phone. The old phone will need to be plugged into power but does not need to be "active". Your use the old phone as the camera and your current phone as the remote. The app is free and there is no charge for the use of the basic Presence. Let me know if this does not make sense! |
Don't make leaving too big of a deal, try to keep matter-of-fact and just let her know that you have to out and you'll be back in a little bit. Definitely leave something of yours with her...something you wore recently, like a t-shirt. I think the short absences to start with are a good idea. If you're anything like me, being apart will probably be harder on you than Tinky! |
Don't worry to much I know she will be fine you need to train her. And you need to do is observe her, every time you leave the house and then you'll come back observe the behavior of Tinky. How long before you come back at home? |
