Auntie and Uncle to Yorkie Hi everyone, I introduced myself a few weeks ago. DH and I babysit a seven-year-old Yorkie named Trupa who belongs to one of our neighbors. Trupa spends weeks at a time with us and is currently vacationing here. We love her so much. She's a big girl: 16 pounds as of this morning. We're carefully monitoring her food intake and we take her on walks totaling three miles a day. Today was a rest day, so she only went out to potty. It was also spa day. I gave a her a bath and trimmed some of her hair with my personal hair scissors. She has a curly cotton coat on her torso and it's in a puppy cut that's growing out. I trimmed her bangs so she could see (her mom doesn't let them grow long enough to clip back), her feet (including between the pads) and her tail area. She looks so pretty and is incredibly soft. She loves the attention and enjoys being groomed. I posted pics in my album a few weeks ago. I need to take new ones. DH and I have kept pet birds (parrots and starlings) for ages and I have an aging guinea pig. We love dogs and had already agreed that when our current pets pass, we will get one. Yorkies weren't even on our radar, but we have totally fallen in love with her. She's incredibly smart, loving, playful and sensitive. I have no doubt that we will get a Yorkie. We want one that's around her size -- at least over 10 pounds. That's a good size for terrier roughhousing, which we and the dog enjoy. Also, I am a walker, and would like to have one that can put in at least a couple of miles with me. I have been reading this site and understand that a number of you have "teapot" Yorkies. Of course, I haven't seen any breeders advertise them that way, so finding one from a breeder might be tough. I am already watching the adoption and rescue sites, even though we're nowhere ready to adopt, yet. This post may be so much mindless drivel, but I wanted to let you know that I'm here and that I am reading and learning from you all. And I'm enjoying looking at your beautiful furbabies. |

My now passed girl weighed in at 17 lbs, not fat, just BIG beautiful girl, my other 3 weighed in at 9 lbs she was the smallest and 2 were 13 lbs. my adopted boy is 12 lbs. I adore the small ones but the bigger fit into my life style, I LOVE roughhousing with them. NO, no breeder breeds for bigger yorkies. Most big ones are just flukes. You may be better off with rescues, they will be adults and have reached their full growth. But I must warn you, window shopping lol, meaning checking adoption and rescue sites if you see something there is NO such thing as " let's JUST go to look at this dog" it don't work, you will fall in love and come home with an unplanned baby. 3 of my babies found a place in my heart and home because I made the mistake of just wanting to look at puppies, best mistake I ever made lol. |

Wow our stories are similar in how we came to love the breed. I wasn't even a dog person, I had cats my entire adult life. My neighbor needed someone she could trust with her yorkie when she went away on business trips. She knew I was an animal lover and would take could care of her yorkie. Like you, we actually started sharing her yorkie Jasmine.....well when my neighbor moved away, I missed Miss Jasmine so much that I went out and found an adorable 7 yr old rescue who gave me 6 years of unconditional love until she passed away at the age of 13. Now I have Duchess who was 2.5 years old (she's 4 yrs old now) when I adopted her and she is a little spitfire.....everyone and every dog in my neighborhood knows who she is :p. |

I would dearly love to have a tiny one and, quite frankly, if it got tired of walking I could carry it. But, like you, the larger just fit our lifestyle better. Nope! Not going to "just look" at puppies till I'm ready to bring one home. Nope, nope, nope...:D Quote:
Trupa's not predictable with other dogs. I'm working on it with her. But she never met a person she didn't like. Everyone in the neighborhood knows her by name. They may or may not know mine. The other day I was walking her and a homeless guy quietly said, "Hi, puppy." I let her go to him. He was delighted that someone acknowledged that he was there and happily patted her. She, of course, loved him no less than anyone else. :aimeeyork |

As he got closer he just kept looking at Piper w/a smile on his face. I, too, let Piper approach and the raggedy, hardened man softened before my eyes and said, "My mom had one of these--a little Yorkie, right?" Then we all moved along, but it surely looked like Piper brought back some good memories for this guy and he is now a good memory for me! Amazing little wonders our Yorkies!! Hoping you get your baby sooner than later!!! |

Thank you so much! I, too, hope that I get "my" dog soon. In the meantime, Trupa says, "Woof" to all the pups here! :animal36 |

You have some very lucky neighbors! What a great pet sitter you two are! Enemy give spa days! Welcome to YT! You may consider a Yorkie rescue when you do decide it's time to adopt. It can be hard to judge the size a pup so be when full grown sometimes. |
