Issue - What to do to get rid of fleas on puppy Hi All, I'm new here, and know nothing about Yorkies. I do, however, know about fleas. I just got a 7-week 3-day old Yorkie puppy today, and I saw a couple of fleas. I know he's too young for Frontline. I have heard that I can bathe him in Dawn detergent; is that true? I appreciate whatever responses you can give me. Thank you. |
Answering my own question I discovered I need to search the forums before posting a question... |
Hi! That's true detergent is one of the most affordable flea remover for our dog. If you need alternatives treatment to control the fleas on our dog i give you some helpful articles based on my research in internet hope this will help you. This information |
You can use any puppy/ dog shampoo or a natural NEEM shampoo made for pets. I like Ark Naturals 'Neem' Protect Shampoo: https://arknaturals.com/dog/grooming...octect-shampoo 1. wet the dog 2. put a ring of shampoo around the neck & lather it up...this will prevent the fleas from scurrying up to the face (They actually go inside the eyes & ears, I've seen it! Not my dogs but a dog that I groomed.) 3. put shampoo everywhere else & lather up...this will kill the fleas or they will jump off the dog & go down the drain w/ the water If you have a flea comb, comb very thoroughly for any left over fleas. Have a cup of water handy to drown them in. Oh & check the inner thigh area, as they hide there...less water reaches there. I'm sure you've read all the other preventative measures, like vacuuming, wash bedding, etc. Repeat. |
I recommend you get a flea comb. You can comb him a couple times a day to remove fleas. What I do is fill the bathroom sink with some water with Dawn it in. I comb the pup and drop the fleas from the comb into the soapy water. Also using a flea comb to comb your pup will help prevent the tiny mats that some pups get. Advantage II can be used on pups 7 weeks or older if you have a lot of fleas. I have used it for years and have never had a problem with it. I usually just put a few drops on the younger pups. |
you can use capstar, its a one time thing, depending on how much your dog weighs. I think they have to be at least 2 lbs though. I use use the dawn, good luck |

Do you all trust internal flea medicines like advantage? I really hesitate to give such a small dog such strong treatments. |
I have read that the natural way to keep fleas and ticks off of dogs is rose geranium oil. I haven't used it yet but will be trying it soon.:aimeeyork |
I remember Brewer's yeast being a natural oral alternative. A recipe I once posted mentions mixing it with coconut oil as well and give it like a small treat. A ratio of something like 1 teaspoon of coconut oil with 1/2 teaspoon brewer's yeast. at that small age I'd give half a teaspoon of said mixture. Revolution does have a flea med that's for puppies weighing 05.-5lbs vet had me use that one about as soon as I brought my girl in and she's used it since. |
