getting a 2nd dog? hi everyone! so i've had my yorkie for about a year and 8 months now. and we're seriously considering getting another dog! (a chihuahua) i do want my second dog to be a bit more calm / more of a lap dog, and i've spoken and met with this breeder and can see that her dogs are a bit more that way. my yorkie is quite hyper, and if it were up to him he would play ALL. day. long. he's really sweet and just loves everyone and everything! i'm wondering - can you have 2 dogs with separate energy levels, or will the new one change to match the current one? i also worry a bit that my yorkie would be relentless in trying to play all day. perhaps i should try it out by babysitting a friend's dog for a few days...? or anyone have experience with having a hyper dog and adding a calm dog to the family? thanks! :) |
Good question and a great idea to babysit another dog for a few days. I think that dogs can mainly take their cues from us. All puppies that are healthy will tend to be a bit more hyper than an adult dog. But my experience with puppies is that they over time settle into the routine of the house. Here I am up very early and get a sloooww start to my day. New pups adjust to this over a couple or few wks believe it or not. |
You can definitely have two dogs with different personalities and energy levels! I do! One of mine is a quiet one person dog and the other is a friendly outgoing dog. They get along great. In fact I think opposites probably attract! |
good to know! thank you for your input. i think we might do it! :) |
I believe it's doable! Especially since dogs come in all different energy levels and personalities, even of the same breed. Scottie was around the same age as your yorkie when I considered getting a second puppy. I was super anxious about it! He was still very very playful at that time. Once he hit 2 years, at which time we brought home Casie, he had already settled down quite a bit. Not sure which of mine has more energy, but Scottie loves standing - his preference is to stand rather than relax and lie down. Casie, despite her bubbly puppy energy level, is kind of a chill puppy - her preference, whenever not much is going on, is to sit or lie down. Given their age difference, I think Scottie was a much more active puppy than Casey is. Anyway, point it, I don't think it matters - they get along great even though they're completely different! :D |
