first time posting hi everyone ... not sure if this is the place to ask this question ... but it's the only place I saw that I could start a thread so please forgive me if it's not the correct place!!! here we go ... our 5 year old yorkie needs to take a med everyday .. was using pill pockets or peanut butter. It was getting so he either found the pill in the peanut butter or pill pocket and not eat it or he would turn up his nose at it and walk away completely. So out of desperation one morning because I knew he liked turkey, I tried putting the pill in a very small piece of nitrate-free, nitrite-free turkey. He takes it that way with no problem. I am concerned, however, that it could be unhealthy for him over a period of time. I have to be honest and say it is so easy I have been resorting to it almost every morning ... I know ... not good. Any information or other suggestions on what to use would be most appreciated. Thanks! |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk. The turkey should be fine. Lean ground turkey is sometimes used as the main protein in some dogs' diets. Ideally it would be turkey that is not processed as deli meat, which can contain things that are not great for dogs. |
Keeping in mind that dogs routinely lick their own butts, eat poop of every description in the yard, will eat road kill if given the opportunity, I have no problem giving meds my dogs may require in a little piece of turkey, if that was the only way I could get the med down him!! As long as you are not giving this pup 1/2 lb of turkey a day, for the rest of his life (although my mother used to feed her chihuahua boiled chicken or turkey everyday of his 14 year life span with no problem!)I will draw the firestorm from you and take it with no problem. I do not believe for one minute that a little piece of meat hiding a pill, given once a day, is going to hurt your baby and I would be doing the same thing if it was MY baby needing med and no way to get him to take it! |

I concur, a little bit of turkey is fine. It's not like you're mixing your pup's meds into a bowl of carnitas! |
A little turkey to give a pill is no prob at all - glad you found something that worked :)! |
I would make sure the turkey is cooked. Ground lean turkey in the George Forman makes them smile. One patty will go a long way. As for the post on giving pups chicken everyday, I do the same. Dehydrated or boiled chicken for supper with his kibble YUM! |
