Changes after neutering My vet recommends neutering Gidget at 6-7 months. What if any, changes can I expect to see in her behavior, etc. First female baby for me. |
Most dogs do not exhibit any behavior changes after spaying/neutering, especially if it is done at a younger age. Some dogs I know who were altered later, 5 years or older, had increased appetites. In their cases, it was a good thing because they were picky eaters before. |
I had 2 females spayed when they were 6 months old, I also had 2 females not spayed, I saw no dif. in personalities between the spayed and non spayed. My spayed girls did not gain weight from being spayed, hand outs and treats is what puts weight on spayed females. |
I really didn't see any changes in the 3 I had fixed when puppies. |

weight gain after s+n is fairly common - at least some of the studies I have read seem to find this. It is unclear why this is so. There might be a change in metabolism - but again this is not well understood. For all or even many dogs do not experience weight gain. I think it is like a wait n see approach. If your dog starts to gain weight 6mths or so after the operation then reduce food and or exercise the dog more. |
