I'm a newbie I just found your forum, and I wanted to say hi. I have one Yorkie, Butch (that's the name he came with), who's eleven years old. We got him when he was eight, from our vets, who had taken him away from abusive, neglectful owners. It took a while for us to win his trust, and especially for my husband; it appears that Butch was treated badly by a man. We suspect that Butch was a puppy mill puppy who was a stud dog. I'm a freelance proofreader and editor, and I work from home. My husband and I do a lot of animal rescue. We have eight cats and two dogs, all rescues, all seniors (except for one cat), and most are special-needs animals. I'm a fanatic knitter, a very inexperienced spinner of yarn, and I love to read. It's so nice to meet you all! |
Hi and welcome :)! You clearly have a big heart to are for all these kiddos. You mentioined you had all seniors....so I must tell you about this guy on Instagram I follow - he's a huge proponent of rescuing senior animals and he has MORE than a few. Enjoy!: https://www.instagram.com/wolfgang2242/ |
Thank you! Thank you for your kind welcome! I absolutely loved the site of the guy who takes care of senior animals, so thank you for giving me the URL to that. Every single picture I looked at made me smile. We had a scare late last night. Somehow, a bee got into the house and stung Butch, our 5-pound, 11-year-old Yorkie. We would never had known, had Butch not started waving his paw in the air and shaking--and had not the bee stumbled across my lap. Thank goodness for the Internet! We immediately looked up "bee sting yorkshire terrier" and found information: baking soda (or was it baking powder? I knew last night. ;-) ) mixed with water and applied to the site, plus the right amount of benadryl. Whew. We were prepared to go to the emergency vet, but Butch got better quickly. He's a bit subdued today, poor little man, but thank goodness he's OK. Hazel |
Welcome! I bet all of those loving furkids keep you busy. |
Thank you! Thanks so much for the kind welcome! Yes, the furkids keep us pretty busy. All of them think they're the ONLY animal in the house, and so they want ALL of our attention. Often, all at once. Butch, the Yorkie, runs the house, of course. If either of us dares to leave the room without Butch's express permission, he barks hysterically, until we come back in and pay attention to him again. For five pounds of dog, he is the noisiest critter we have. He barks, sneezes, and burps louder than all of our other animals together. :-) I'm also taking care of two young kittens. For a week, I was bottle feeding them every three hours--THAT got exhausting!--and then another foster mother from the animal rescue from which they came took over. Now that they're eating on their own, I'm taking care of them again. They had such terrible upper respiratory infections plus coccidia. One, Hugo, had eyes that were just about stuck shut. But they're doing so well now. Fat and happy. They get Clavamox twice a day, and Hugo gets eye drops a few times per day. I'm so glad I found you folks! Hazel |
Welcome Hazel and all your little rescues! |
Hi, margaritaville! Thanks so much for welcoming me! I'm looking forward to learning lots on this forum. All my critters say hi. Hazel |
Hello and welcome :) |
Captainzing, thanks for your kind welcome! I'm a freelance proofreader and editor, and I have a tight-deadline project that I'm working on. I have to send it out by Thursday! Ulp! So, no day off for me, alas. So glad I found this group! Hazel |
Hi Hazel, I read your post about Butch being stung by the bee. Poor boy! Happy to hear you had benadryl and baking soda. He sounds like a great little guy. It's amazing how such small creatures can wrap everyone around their little paws. Sending well wishes for your kitties. |
Thanks for writing, Maximo! Yes, Butchie is fine. Thank goodness for the Internet! If it hadn't been available, we'd no doubt have had to rush him to an emergency clinic. He's back to his usual bossy self again. ;-) Yes, Butch has us wrapped around his tiny paws. His job is to run our household. :-) Hazel |
I am very happy to hear Butch is back to himself and back to his duties, in command. ;):) |
Until we got our rescue Yorkie, we had no idea what sort of personality Yorkies had. We'd always had big, senior dogs who were very laid back. Then Butchie came into our lives. Right after our vets saved his life, he was a really unhappy little creature, who did not want to be alive. No wonder, given the horrible life he must have led for eight long years. When he came to us, he was still not thrilled with life. But slowly, he came around, and now he's a happy--and bossy--little man. He's smaller than any of our cats and certainly smaller than Sidney, our 70-pound lab/hound mix, but he's in charge of everybody and everything. He's sweet and hilarious, and we adore our little man. Hazel |
welcome! yorkies are certainly full of personality :) |
lovestiny, we had no idea how full of personality Yorkies were until Butch came into our lives! He's amazing! Hazel |
