Spaying and neutere at what age I have to females and a male. Mom ,daughter and son . So I want to get them fixed but at what age is best. Mom is just going out of her cycle and the 2 babies will be 6 months on the 26th of may. Mom weighs 5- 6 #s and male weighs 5 #s now and the daughter still small 3-4 #s weights depends their eating |
I am a strong proponent of allowing the growth plates to complete growing, and this is usually complete by 8 months old. That is also right before the little boys start marking territory so you catch that before that behavior starts, and females MAY have had one period....all this is great. |
I am a huge fan of spaying before a females first heat. My girl was spayed at 8 months before her first heat. I'm not sure about neutering but I will probably get my new boy pup fixed at 6 months old. I have read many articles that say growth plates continue to close after spaying and neutering. |
Growth plates will close regardless of whether they are spayed or neutered. The timing of spaying is a consideration, however. All of my dogs over the years have been spayed or neutered. I also thought spaying before the first heat was better. However I now would wait until the growth plates closed. In a small dog like a Yorkie that might very well happen by eight months, and you can do a simple X-ray of the tibia to be sure. The link I have attached is very interesting, and I like the author. Spaying and neutering studies are mostly done on large breeds, but I still find the information worthwhile. Congratulations on your new puppy, Taylor. http://www.caninesports.com/uploads/...tions_2013.pdf |

One thing to keep in mind also is retained baby teeth in Yorkies. I also tried to wait long enough for most of the baby teeth to come out on their own. While they were under anesthesia I had the retained teeth pulled at that time. |
