Question Regarding Primal Raw Hi guys. I have a quick question for you... One of my baby is currently 9 months old, loving Primal Raw Frozen foods. I know on Primal website, it says to feed puppy amount of 4%, which should be 3.8 nuggets, but if I feed him that much, he becomes a complete sausage. I've reduced it to 3 nuggets, but I'm scared he's not getting all the nutrient he needs. I don't know if it'd be good idea to reduce his food amount even a bit more.. :/ I also do feed him snacks throughout the day, but mostly fruits.. not much though. couple pieces of blueberries.. maybe 4 per day.. 1 TBSP of banana or whatnot.. and dehydrated chicken breast pieces for training purposes.. I know that he should be on puppy recommended amount of food till 1 year old, but I'm afraid he may get overweight if I stay as is. Should I just lower his food a bit more.. keep it as it and just stop giving him those fruits and other snacks? Thanks. |
Every dog is different, and at 9 mths old your kiddo is now considered an adult - so you can change your feeding accordingly. Yes, if he becomes a little sausage at 3.8 nuggets, then I would decrease it too if I were you. This is what my kiddos get w/ Primal, per meal (they eat 2x per day, btw): - Wylie (8.5 lbs): 2 nuggets - Marcel (4 lbs): 1 nugget - Pfeiffer (4 lbs): 1 nugget - Arthur (7.5 lbs): 1 nugget (he is a chihuahua and must have a much slower metabolism bc I used to have him on 2 nuggets per meal and he too became a little sausage dog! He is now back down to a good weight, but it takes a while.) |
@Wylie's Mom, thank you for the response. At what month are they considered as a adult? My vet is absolute anti-raw food and she was trying to scare me out of it, saying it could cause metabolic bone disease.. I've contacted with primal, but they reassured me again.. But after hearing my vet saying that I've been really paranoid. How do I know if my baby is getting all the nutrient he needs? Especially if I'm cutting down his food amount? I want to give him whatever is best so he can be with me as long as he can. :) I'm also giving him coconut oil & fish oil daily along with his meals. |
Technically, yorkies are considered "adult" around 6 mths old, according to most breeders. Many, many, MANY vets are very uneducated about food / nutrition in general, but most especially about raw. Don't let the scare tactics get to you :). Primal is AAFCO certified, which means it's balanced in the exact same way that kibble, canned, freeze dried, fresh etc is balanced. He is getting all that he needs with this food. It's not the amount of food that ensures getting nutrients -- it's more like it's the correct amount for body weight while AAFCO balanced at the same time. Rest assured that your kiddo is getting one of the most premium diets on the planet! :) |
@wylie's mom, yeah the vet definately scared me. She was saying it may be too late but i need to change the diet immediately. >.> I just wanted what's best for my baby and I thought raw food are good for dogs. After doing some research, ive found primal and my babies loves it! I really didn't want to lean back on kibble since my past puppy choked on his orijen :/ I guess I'm sort of traumatized still. Thank you so much for reassuring me. I didn't know who to talk to about this since my vet is so anti-raw. Lol |
