GPS tracking for your pets I found another interesting GPS tracking product for your pets. This one is a collar that allows you to track you pets movements from a smartphone. I think this one has an unlimited range (I think). If so, I am thinking about getting it. There have been two instances where my littles one have gotten outside without me knowing. Accidents do happen no matter how much we try to protect them. Here's the link if anyone is interested. I just checked...it has unlimited range, you can track them anywhere in the US and it's only 79.00 but you get 15% for 67.99 if you use this coupon code FETCH-15. I am ordering one now http://www.whistle.com/ |
So I just ordered one and I got free shipping too. This is way cool because you set email and text alerts if they go outside a range you specify and then you can start tracking there movement. I love it. For a one time price, I think it's a small price to pay for a little peace of mind. Obviously it won't protect against thiefs who can just remove the collar. I know there is someone out there that will probably invent a version that can be implanted but until that day, this is the next best option. I looked at other tracking devices and so far, this is the only (that I know of) that can be tracked anywhere in the country (unlimited range). So between, her microchip and her tags and now gps tracking.....I should have no problem finding her if she should get out without me knowing (hopefully). It is my one biggest fear I guess that is why I am so overly protective of her. |
I'm concerned about their safety, unlike the microchip, which is a "passive" electronic device and doesn't emit signals, these would be emitting a live signal 24/7 and I don't think they know enough about the harmful effects of these signals. For me, it would be better to invest in something to keep my dogs from escaping the house, behavioral training or extra gates. Once they are outside, even if you can tract them, they are very vulnerable to getting hit by a car. I think they might be kind of good for part time use on some dogs, but last I heard, they are best suited for dogs over 20 pounds. Maybe someone can submit something about the safety? |

If it is GPS doesn't that mean it will only track when they are outside with availibity to a satellite. So, if someone stole them and put them in the basement would you get a signal any more? Maybe would get where they were last seen! I used to use Tile For my luggage until I dickered in the building it was not track able due to no satellite access inside. |

I also ordered Duchess another hi-tech toy....I'm an IT geek and love electronic gadgets. Anyway, this toy called the playdate is a ball with a camera inside of it that has audio and you can control it's movements. It's the perfect babysitter for when you are not home. You can control the ball from a smartapp. If you dog loves to play with balls this is perfect for him because you can literally control the ball. If you little one doesn't like playing with balls, you can use the ball to follow them around the house! How cool is that? Duchess has free range and I can follow her to see if she is getting in any trouble. Because it has audio, I can speak to her as well. I p reordered that and it won't be shipped until December:( |

I don't use a GPS but my Aunt's Dog has one attached to his collar and it is great. He has escaped a few times and it alerts her if he is out of the range. She has been using it for a few years and I do not think there has been any effects to her dog in relation to a live signal. |
I like the idea but if your dog were stolen, not lost, all they would have to do to deactivate the gps is take the collar off or remove the batteries. |
