I have a question Hi, I really want to buy a friendly happy small dog for my family. The thing is my building only allows pets that don't bark. I'm thinking of getting a yorkie for my family. But I'm not sure of their barking nature. I have read many books about the yorkie breed. I'm not sure if I understand correctly that yorkies bark alot. Do they bark all day? Or once in a while? Is their barking loud enough for a neighbor to hear it from her apartment? I really appreciate any info and advice. Thank you |
Of course, not all generalizations apply to all dogs. I can only speak from my experience. My female Yorkie, that I grew up with as a child, only barked when someone was at the door or when a stranger entered the home. My current male Yorkie is basically a mute, and hardly ever barks inside. However, he does bark when outside on walks. My advice would be to look into a good breeder that not only breeds for health, but temperament. Good luck. Quote:

In my opinion, it seems like it will be hard to find any dog that never barks. I've known some Yorkies that bark incessantly, and I've known some that bark occasionally. Mine barks every time she hears someone at the door or thinks she hears someone at the door. Overall she is a very well mannered dog, but she is still going to bark. Little dogs also bark more than big dogs. The only dogs I've had that rarely barked where Italian greyhounds and full sized greyhounds. They hardly ever bark because they are not protective. |
If barking would be an issue, I'd like to suggest you look into older dogs that have already developed their personality. |
All dogs bark. Knowing if they are going to be heavy or light barker is a crap shoot! Maybe a cat would be better while you are an apartment dweller. Would be a mess to have issues that could cause the devastation of reforming. |

Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Each Yorkie and situation is different. If your family is on the go most of the day and the dog will be alone in your apartment, I would say there is a strong possibility of separation anxiety or boredom that will result in a lot of barking. Most Yorkies are energetic and need a lot of stimulation and exercise. Without it, they will tend to bark more. My boys do not bark all day, but certain noises will set off a barking jag. Do you have children and how old are they? There are many Yorkies who get along great with kids, but many are not the best breed for kids. Even the most lovable Yorkies can be feisty. Being terriers, they tend not to be docile lap dogs. The smaller the Yorkie, the more fragile too. If you are looking for a breed that tends to be more docile and relaxed, a Maltese or Pug might be a better choice. Or as someone suggested above, look for an adult Yorkie whose personality you can gauge. |
My now passed girls (4 in all) would bark if a fly flew over Alaska lol, yorkies have excellent hearing, yes they were barkers. My rescue boy who was 2.5 y/o when I got him will bark if my land line phone rings, he sees squirrels, birds, dogs or if someone comes to the house. Compared to my girls I would say he does not bark a lot lol, he also does not bark when I leave him home alone. I think you would be taking a chance in getting a dog period. There is no guarantee a dog will not bark at something. Neighbors are a pain in the butt, one bark a day could be annoying to them, I would hate to see you get a dog, fall in love with it, then have to give it up for disturbing the neighbors, that will tear your heart out and if you have children it would be devastating to them. I would stay away from getting a dog as long as you are living in this apartment. Good luck in making the decision to get or not get a dog. |
Barking is a dog's voice - so all dogs bark, for some reason or another. Some bark way more than others. If barking isn't allowed, I honestly can't see how you'd be able to ever get a dog...unless you could find someone who was re-homing an adult dog who didn't bark much at all. Maybe get a cat instead...? |
I don't think you'd be able to get a guarantee that any dog will never bark. Mine does just two barks when someone is at the door, but I don't know if he would bark more at an apartment with lots of people coming and going close by. He also barked like crazy as a puppy when we put him to bed every night. It took a few weeks of sleepless nights for him to like his bed area. I bought the bark deterrent egg, but it did nothing. Nothing I did worked, he had to stop on his own. |

My first Yorkie used to bark a lot. Now I've got two and when one starts to bark the other joins in :) Once I tell them to stop, they do, but this happens several times a day. I've tried training them but I can't seem them to tone it down :) Thankfully, it's all quiet during the night, not one bark :aimeeyork |
My little boy has no rhythm or reason for his barking. Most times when someone's at the door, looks out the window barks @ outside activities, a different noise. Then there are days he's very quite. I would be very careful bringing in a Yorkie to an apartment. Neighbors will hear him back. Dogs should never be punished for barking. Good luck |
I have to agree with all. Yorkies will bark and some more than others. When getting a puppy you need to spend time training them about the barking. I allow my dogs to bark a bit because I have guard n protect breed - but I also usually can stop the barking. The point is there will always be some barking going on. So maybe get a cat or wait until you are in a more dog friendly place. Also Yorkies are not known to be so great with kids. |
Depends on your training. My babies only bark when there's someone on the door. I have also read that Yorkies bark a lot, but not all. It really depends on the dog itself. Good luck!:yorkiesar |
When I was reading about yorkies before I got Apple Blossom, I read the same thing. They are barkers and stubborn to train. Well Blossom only barks when my granddaughter gets down on the floor playing with her and the training part was wrong too. From day one she used her puppy pad without accidents. Her mom and dad were not barkers either. I have to say though that when she barks while playing, it is not something you'd want to listen to for very long. It's the highest pitch bark you ever wish to hear. |
