Wanna buy a new Yorkie puppie !! I hope this gets to the general discussion forum. I'm not sure how to navigate around this sight yet. I'm hoping to buy a normal size Yorkie pup. I live in Calif and would prefer to buy in Calif/Navada. I can't seem to find a price under $1,800... any ideas? |
You should be able to find great quality at that price. Have you checked IIS Windows Server yet...? Try show breeders in AZ too, btw. I got my Marcel (avatar) from Kathy Murphy in AZ. |
Just wanted to put out the reminder that the more expensive the puppy does NOT mean you're getting a HEALTHY puppy. Make sure you do your research with the breeders before you make any commitment. |
Shop for a reputable breeder....shop for your breeder BEFORE you shop for your puppy........when you have found a reputable, caring breeder, devoted to the breed and not turning a quick buck, (off loading puppies before they are 12 weeks old minimum before expense of proper vaccinations is initiated, is a great clue of the quality/devotion/concern of your breeder). Hang around dog shows...get to meet yorkie breeders that show....get properly educated in what a yorkie is SUPPOSED to look like, SUPPOSED to be, SUPPOSED to have as personality traits....when you are thoroughly educated on what you should be looking for in a HEALTHY, WELL BRED yorkie, then you will know what is acceptable and what to look for in your breeder as well as the pup. |
In many parts of the country, $1,800 is pretty standard for girls and $1,600 for boys, champion sired and pet quality, AKC registered and no breeding rights. Prices are a little higher in New England and some other areas with high demand and easy proximity. With research and patience, you can find good breeders who have Yorkie pups for less. Sometimes show breeders will hold back a pup for potential show and release them to pet homes by 1 or 2 years of age. As Magnus wrote, price does not guarantee health. Definitely need to research the breeder and health guarantee. |

I was also very nervous about finding the perfect breeder. It's really hard because you don't know them, they don't know you, and it's hard to find out more about them. Purely based on my own experience, observations, and/or opinion... I found that the breeders who were pushy and pressured you were the ones who were about making the money (i.e. potential backyard breeders). The ones who sell for $3000+ are scams that market their pups as teacups etc (i.e. probably from puppy mills). The ones who used to be show champions, but not anymore, may do a lot of inbreeding with their 10 to 20 dogs who all live in their home (which I was skeptical about). The ones who have websites but have not updated their site for over a year, are probably not current with their breeding and you may have issues with them (i.e. you might lose your deposit and not end up getting a puppy at all!). There are also ones who ship puppies and claim that they've been doing it for years and that it's perfectly safe - personally, that doesn't bode well with me. But that's just me. I am an extremely overly cautious person though and I feel I should be when it comes to picking out my furbabies. The breeder search is momentary, but the puppies life and their health is lifelong. Also, with the internet, it's easy to be fooled by deceptive websites and claims - you just never know! Based on the number of stories of pups dying from ages 1 yr to 3 yrs (or even suffering from life threatening health issues), it really reinforces my thinking that I should be extremely cautious - we all should! Call me old-school, but I like in-person interactions. You can still be deceived in person, but the chances are less (I think so anyway). I strongly encourage those who are looking for a purebred Yorkie (rather than adopting from a rescue) to attend dog shows and get to know current dog show breeders. If you find one that you have a good vibe with, who has been doing it for years and still producing champions, they probably have a really good bloodline. Even if you have to wait a year or so, be it for a new litter or for an older show potential, it'd definitely be worth the wait once you find that perfect breeder for you. |

here are some of the things I have recently learned... *unless someone has bought a puppy from the breeder RECENTLY, then do not consider it a current referral *if the breeder does not have the time to update their website in one or more years, ask directly, will they have time to email or call you with litter updates once they are born? *if the deposit is refundable, ask how long will that take to refund you? * If you are flying to get your pup, tell the breeder you need the names for the exact airports you can fly in and out of to pick up your pup so you can research the flights, before you give a deposit Hands down, I would recommend everything canana said. |
