Mimi and I are new! Greetings everyone! Mimi and I are happy to join the forum! I thought this would be something good for the both of us since I'm new at having a Yorkie. I've had dogs before but none so tiny and especially not purebred. I want to make this experience great for the both of us. The last time I had a dog was over 15 years ago so consider me somewhat new at all of this adventure. Im constantly researching on the internet to make sure I'm doing the right thing. Mimi is 2 months, 17 days old. I've already started teaching her to "potty" on the puppy pads and she is doing great! No luck with "come". However, she seems to respond to "no" as long as you do not yell it at her. I have her scheduled for new puppy training in a week and can't wait to get her outside to play. Any words of wisdom or suggestions are welcome.... |
Welcome to YT, your puppy should have all her vaccines l before she goes to training school. I am surprised the trainer did not tell you this. |
Hello to you and Mimi! Your avatar pic is adorable! |
Hi and welcome - congrats on your new baby!!! Most classes require that dogs be fully vaccinated...but your puppy won't be yet, so I'd check about that. |

Isn't it funny that even with previous dog experience, Yorkies seem like an entirely new species? lol You'll find a lot of great information here. I've certainly learned a lot. Many very helpful and resourceful members here too! As with "come", just make sure that each time she comes to you on her own to celebrate and say "good girl, come" or something like that. Try to have kibble/treats on you (i.e. pockets etc) all the time so you give her one whenever she comes to you. And just make sure that no matter what the situation, even if she's been bad, to never punish her when she comes to you (i.e. don't say "come here, you've been a bad girl" etc..) |
Greetings! Yes, you are absolutely right. I did tell him that she only had the first set, but he said that that would be OK. Today is the first class so when I go in, I will make sure to tell him again. I may have to put it off for another week. She is due for her second set of shots this Friday (tomorrow). Thanks bunches! I appreciate the feedback. |
Yes, I will. Absolutely! Thank you! |
Welcome to the wonderful world of Yorkies! |
welcome! I had two maltese before my yorkies and boy, they are completely different creatures, aren't they?! Is your training private, in home? Maybe that is why it is ok she isn't fully vaccinated yet. |
Hello Fmootri! Welcome to both of you here and good luck on your journey. Having a dog with you is the best opportunity ever, but there comes a great responsibility tag along with that. I'm also new on this forum, and this is the most active forum where I have registered to so far. Yorkies are intelligent and independent but they'll need all the love and care they could get from you. Good luck and enjoy! :):animal36:animal-pa |
This training is at a Petsmart. My Mimi got her second set of shots today and I postponed the classes until after for a while until she gets her third set of shots. Besides, the dog sitter and I have been training her at home. She is two months old now and already uses the potty pad without being told to, she can sit, lay down and come as well. She is not perfect, but she does a darn good job. She is not too bad on the leash although she is limited to where she can go. I've very proud of her and very thankful to the sitter who follows my lead in training. |
