new puppy
 

hello everyone, a lil about me. I have 2 yorkies, 1 male 4 year old and a female 2 year old. My BF just came home 2 nights ago with a 6 week old male yorkie and I say to him "ummmmm whose dog is that" and he goes "he's ours"..... so needless to say I have a new baby and i'm not to happy that the breeders sold him before he should have left his mom, My BF doesn't know much about puppy rules that breeders should follow, what's done is done. So I am here now looking for advice. Is there anything I should be doing different since he is so young? I have him on a formula I bought at pet store, I have puppy dry food as well. Is there any suggestions on making him feel safe and comfy, he cries sometimes. My other dogs haven't been the most welcoming to him. gotta give it time I guess.

I also brought Gidget home at 6 weeks. Took her to Vet the next day. He said everything looked good but the main thing was getting calories in her. Told me to mix her mashed dry food with Gerbers chicken stage 2. At that point she weighed 1.4 oz. Did this for about a month. Took her back at 9 weeks and she weighed 1.9 oz. He was pleased that she was gaining weight. As she was able to eat her dog food without me mashing it, I gradually reduced the amt of baby food chicken. She's now 16 week and weighs 2 1/2 lbs. Vet said she'll probably never weigh more than 5 lbs but she is eating plain dry dog food, playing like a little play machine, sleeps all night. She had the last of her baby shots this week so I can now start taking her outside. She's trained to the wee wee pads so thi has not been an issue. I also keep Pedialyte on hand in case she appears droopy. She had a difficult day yesterday with a few loose stools and not wanting to eat (I'm sure it was from the distemper shot she got Thur.). So today, it's back to doses of Pedialyte every few hours. She should being to perk up. No signs of loose stools today so will keep a very close eye on her. Hope this helps. LUV MY Gidgy-girl!!!

6 weeks, I would be so nervous! I would keep him safely separated from your adult doggies until he is bigger. Let them sniff each other through the xpen or crate kind of thing.

Just discovered why Gidget didn't want to eat or drink. I changed her food bowls to some I had with another dog. They were slightly bigger and in a bowl holder. When I put her food in the smaller bowls she had been using, she ate every bit of her food and drank most of her water. The bowls are actually for cats so they are smaller and lower to the ground. I had changed to the larger ones in the holder b/c she or I one would tend to knock the bowls over -- dog food and water everywhere. So now it's back to PetCo to find bowl holders for the smaller bowls. Oh, well......

That is great to hear. My Mimi rarely eats from her bowls. They are deep so that may be the problem for her as well. I will look for some shallow bowls and try them out. Right now, she primarily eats from my hand and that takes way too much time for the amount of food she eats.

I'm glad to pass this on to others. Discovered the bowl size issue just by chance.

That's the most crucial stage of a dog's age. Good luck on taking good care of that cutie.

My two little ones never liked to eat from a bowl. I feed them in the saucers that came with my dishes. They work great with the little well in the center. We never used them or the coffee cups either for that matter.

That's an excellent idea! I think I will try that tomorrow. I never use the saucers either and what a waste. Hopefully this will help out my Mimi.
