Questions about daily activities and routines Hello all, I'm a relatively new member and new yorkie parent. I have 4 1/2 month old Koda and it's just me and him for now until the rest of our family moves in within the month. I have been curious as to what other yorkie parents do during the day. ie, do you constantly give your dog attention, is he/she the only thing you pay attention to, how long do you leave them alone at home (if necessary), things like that. The question I'm really looking for an answer too is the attention one. Sometimes I feel like all I do all day is give attention to Koda, and while I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I don't want him to develop any separation anxiety or to expect that he will always have 100% of everyone's attention. I know he is still a very young puppy, so maybe his energy level and need for attention is bigger than it will be. I'm just looking for a little insight on what it was like for everyone else while they watched their yorkies grow from pups to adults. Thanks everyone. :aimeeyork |
We have 4 dogs, and I wouldn't say I constantly give them attention, but I really never turn them away either...bc I can't lol :p. When/if they need a little attention/lovin', I always give it to them. I think for young puppies like you have, the needs can be greater bc they're SO used to being w/ their Momma and littermates 24/7. |
If you are concerned about separation anxiety, you can actually start training them now. I recommend getting a webcam with a phone app. Leave the house and observe what your little one is doing. If you notice any separation anxiety, you can take steps to correct it. I had a rescue yorkie who had separation anxiety. I would just observe her and make any necessary corrections and after some additional training, she was able to just relax and play a little and sleep a lot. |
My dogs receive all my attention when I am home but that is because there is no one lese there. |
Attention Attention Attention Yep that's what Yorkies want. They are such people dogs. I'm in & out just about everyday, but not for extended hours. Just love coming in & interacting with mine for the rest of the day. We cook together, we clean together, except he hides when the vacuum comes out. We take walks, play inside & outside, of course him on an extra long leash. I think you can never give them enough Attention. Just be calm & have fun. No one can replace the fun with a Yorkie. |
Welcome to YT. Yorkie puppies, need, DEMAND lol a lot of attention, they are people dogs, meaning they need to be with us all the time. As you baby grows he will DEMAND less attention, NOT a LOT less lol, but he will start entertaining himself. I have had yorkies for 30+ years no small children to care for, I never saw it as "giving them attention" I saw it as giving me pleasure, laughter, entertainment. My now rescued little boy came to me at 2.5 years old. His prev. owner had him crated while they were at work, so he was use to being alone. When he came to me he had freedom of the entire house, he would never see a crate again. The first month I had him if I had to go out he came with me. I didn't want him to think I abandoned him, he need to gain trust in me, he needed to know he was in his forever home. After a month I started to leave him alone for short periods, I have a cameras, he slept while I was gone. I assume because he was use to being alone for many hours while the prev. owner worked, he was use to it, so there are no problems with him. Koda is just a little baby, I would crate him, x-pen or iris pen is the best way to keep him protected, safe, and out of mischief. Try leaving him alone but protected, yorkies can get into so much mischief that can harm them. Leave him for 30 minutes, gradually increase the time, get him use to there will be times he will be alone. Enjoy these puppy days, they grow so fast. |
As everyone wrote above, yes Yorkies love attention. :) Most would love to be entertained by their humans all day. It's hard to say no. My boys have at least one human with them at all times, but we did have 1 emergency week where they had to spend some time alone. I videotaped them and they were fine. Slept most of the time. As suggested above, you can train for your pup to accept time alone. Start with brief periods and work your way up. |
