New Member Hello my name is Sandy. I just joined today and will soon get around to exploring everything in more detail and do my profile. Also to post pics of my precious Bernie. I have a question I'd like to ask in the meantime. I have had Yorkies in the past. My first male was only 4.5 lbs and looked and acted like so many other Yorkies do. My husband surprised me a few weeks back with an early birthday present; a 10 week old purebred male Yorkie. Of course I fell in love instantly. My question is: He has the markings and coloring and temperament as a Yorkie, but he has a longer face with less fur on it and he has extra large ears! He is now 14 weeks old and will definitely weigh more than 4.5 pounds (double at least). Is this description normal for a "purebred" or do you think he is a mix? I've looked at many pics and he looks like a Yorkie but with these differences.:aimeeyork |
hi welcome, I am not an expert but just wanted to say congrats! A purebred yorkie as definined by AKC standard is supposed to be 4-7 pounds but we see on this forum, there are ones less and more then the standard. If they are too far off from standard, is it a fluke or less then ideal breeding choices- but in the end, I am sure you will enjoy your fella! My gal was the runt of the litter and was supposed to be 4 pounds, she never made it past 3.5 lbs but she is amazing! Looking forward to pics! |
Hello and welcome to YT :) |
:welcome4: |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk and congratulations on your new baby! Weight, ear size, and snout shape do not determine a purebreed. There is a standard that breeders try to achieve in their programs, but not all Yorkies achieve the standard. Some Yorkies are larger than standard, have larger ears, and longer or super short snouts. |
Welcome to YT, In a total of 4 yorkies I have had now all passed, one had short muzzle, floppy ears, weight 9 lbs, one med. size muzzle, floppy ears, weight 13 lbs, one had longer muzzle, floppy ears, weight 13 lbs, my last girl had long muzzle, Huge beautiful German ears, weight 17 lbs My rescue boy has med. size muzzle, HUGE gorgeous ears, weight 12lbs. All were / are AKC pure breed yorkies. As Maximo pointed out, yorkies come in all sizes. Over standard weight (7 lbs) and larger ears does not mean it is not a pure breed yorkie. Large, medium, small all yorkies have the charm, huge personalities, and mischievous traits. They will capture your heart in a heart beat. You will love you baby no matter what his size / weight is. Hope to see picture of your new baby. |
Hi and welcome to YT! Congrats on your new baby! It may help if you post a pic - then we could take a look. But I bet your kiddo is purebred...just looks different from your 1st one. There really is a lot of variety in "look" when it comes to yorkies. |
Hi..thanks for your response I already love him with all my heart. He is learning quickly. I was just wandering because sometimes you don't get the entire truth from some breeders and since I wasn't there.....I kinda wondered if he might have some Dashound somewhere in his line. |
