Yorkie not taking to new baby I have a 1 1/2 year old yorkie named Ellie who is the baby of our family. My children are about grown so Ellie is our baby for sure. She goes everywhere we go and is the center of attention. She is the most perfect yorkie in so many ways. So yesterday we happened upon a Yorkie-Poo for sale and brought this baby home. She is 1.5 lbs and has melted all of our hearts except for Ellie. At first Ellie wanted nothing to do with her and would barely look at her. I was heart broken that Ellie did not take to her because whenever she sees other animals she wants to love them and play with them. She has never had any issues with meeting new friends. Now Ellie seems really sad and not playful like she usually is. I have been showing her more attention and trying to keep her on the same schedule that she is used to. My daughter is 19 years old and has been tending to the new puppy and I have been sneaking kisses and love when I can but I do not want Ellie to feel that she has been replaced or anything. Please tell me this won't last very long and they will end up best friends soon! Is it maybe because the puppy is just so small? Ellie is 6 pounds. Any suggestions? |
I totally understand your worries, I've been there. Btw, welcome to YT :). I would just continue to give it time. They may or not become best of friends, but Ellie will come to tolerate the new kiddo, at the very least. Keep giving her extra attention and TLC and you will help her adjust. |
I agree with Ann, give it more time. First few days are most challenging. My boys liked each other immediately, but we still had things to sort out. Some things took days, others weeks. I think it took about 6 months before everything was settled. :) Keep giving Ellie lots of attention and try to maintain her routine. Give her space to escape the puppy if she wants. Trick training and walks helps my boys forge a bond. You probably will have to wait a bit for the walks. We didn't force anything between the boys. Just let them sort it out on their own. I continued to do things alone with my first, Max, reassuring him that he wasn't losing his place with me. |
