Bath question Hi everyone! My 6 month old puppy freezes every time I bath him. I use warm water-I'm afraid to go much hotter b/c I don't want to burn him. I always make sure the air doesn't come on. I have tried putting a little electric heater in there (which is a little dangerous). How do all of you keep your babies warm? |

Are you thinking he's freezing b/c he shakes? If it's just the shakes, he might be from anxiety. Also, if the water doesn't "hot" on your skin, it won't be for the puppy. Generally, their body temps are higher than humans. How are you bathing them? I usually use the handspray instead of putting them in a pool of water. If he likes treats, try giving him little bits of treats during the bath. This might encourage him to liking bath time more. :) |
Yeah he may be shaking because he is scared. This may be weird, but I actually got in the tub to give mine a bath at first until he got used to it. Then I always make sure to dry him off really well so he isn't walking around wet. |
Yeah, I think you guys are right. He's not cold, he's scared. I do give him treats. Rosy1013, what a fabulous idea! I might try getting in the tub with him next time. Lilgidget, my vet said to bath him every 3-4 weeks. He is always really dirty by then b/c he does like to be outside a lot. I would love to know for sure which is correct. |
I'd get 2 towel most of the time. One to dry them up and the other to tuck them and bring their body temperature back up. Make sure you cuddle them too so this process is quicker. If they have a medium or long coat, you'll have to probably dry it out with a blower. I would set it to warm and don't blow on their face. |
I always warm their towels in the dryer to wrap them in. They seem to get oily on their head and face, so mine get a bath about every 7-10 days and they don't go outside - in between or as needed I do a butt and underside wash to get any dried urine out of their hair so they smell better |
I agree with the others that it is probably fear and not being cold. My boys shake until I finish their heads. They don't like having the water poured over their heads. They have baths once a week. Sometimes we push it to almost 2 weeks if we haven't had as much time outdoors. Other times, we do partial body washes in between and use a wash cloth on the face. I also agree with the warm towels afterwards. Makes them happy. :) |
You may be able to turn the water hotter -- always test the temp of the water on the inside of your wrist - if it's okay for you in that spot, it will be okay for him too. :) |
Bath time varies among the members. Some give baths once a week, some once a month, and some once in couple/few months. If for whatever reason I can't give them a proper bath, I use the "waterless bath" for a "intermittent cleaning" till I have time to give them a proper bath. Espree One of our members Mimimomo sells them and she'll answer any questions you may have. |
It may also depend on the climate in which you live. I got Max in New Mexico before we moved back south a month later. If I bathed him every week, his skin got dry and he was super itchy. Now he's fine with more frequent baths. |
My Princess hides when the grooming bag comes out. LOL she hates getting her ears cleaned. She shakes a lot. Could be something about the bathing process, before or after that he doesn't like. Do you blow dry him afterwards? Even in the warmer days, mine will shiver until they're about half dry from the blow dryer. I use a cool room temp setting but when it's cold, I use the warm setting & blast cool air (it has a button) intermittently, so it doesn't get too warm for them. |

My baby gets a bath about every 2 weeks. I bath him in the kitchen sink and let him partially dry on a big swim towel. Then I wrap him in his blanket and hold him until he is dry. He loves his bath except for his head. |

Bathing I bathe my Frankie about every 10 days ...he has a long coat and if I go too long he is a mess! I use a good shampoo and conditioner...he loves the bath and even better likes to run about the table wiping his head on the towels...I let him get his wiggles out before we blow dry and style.....I generally put a heating pad under the flannel quilt while I am combing and blow drying..... |
I use a wet wash cloth with a small amount of JJ baby shampoo on Mario's head/face then rinse with a wet cloth. I worry about getting water in his ears if I poured water over his head. Also, Mario get the same treat, at the same time ***every*** bath. As soon as I am done with his second dry he stands up on his hind legs looking on the kitchen counter for it with such excitement. I think it helps make bath time a bit more bearable for him. As a service dog, he is bathed every 5-7 days and no problems yet. |
Cody gets his bath every other week, I bathe him in the shower, he shakes because he doesn't like to get baths. I put cotton balls in side his ears then hold his ears flat against his head so no water gets in his ears. I use 2 towels, one for as soon as I take him out of the shower, rub him down to get most of the water out, the other one for drying him more. I blow dry him in the winter months, warm setting, when I do his face I hold the dryer further away from his face, blow for only a few seconds at a time. I believe your pup shakes because he is nervous / anxious, most dogs do not like bath time. My now 4 passed girls use to hide under the bed when they saw the towels come out lol. |
