Tick/Flea control for your yard? Since this is my first time having a home with a back yard, I'm trying to figure out what the best way is to keep it tick/flea free! I'd appreciate any recommendations for yard spray or other methods. Of course, needs to be pet friendly. :D |
If your grass yard is cut short and there are not a lot of brush or leave pile, I recommend using food grade diatomaceous earth. You can get it at your local tractor supply or on the internet. Spread it around the yard and it will kill any insect with a exo-skelly shell like ants/fleas/mites/spider/centipede/etc... Only use it on dry days and make sure the week will be dry too. If the diatomaceous earth gets wet, it will not work. You can put it in your carpet or furniture or under your bed too for bed bugs. This is food grade so it will not harm your pets or you or your children. Another note is that this item will not kill right away, but it will kill them eventually. What it does is it a micro glass and it punctures insect exo-skelly and dries them to die. To us it only feels like powder. If you or your children/pet eat it by accidentally, most you'll get is a good diarrhea flushing your stomach. :) It's what some people use to de-tox themselves. I hope this helps for a natural and safe method for control. |
I use DemonMax. It kills all insects in the yard...roaches, june bugs, ants, fleas, ticks and about 1500 other creepy crawly things.....My yard had been insect free for years and like an idiot, I stopped spraying....and OMG!!! after that last flood we had here at the end of last year, we were inundated with mice and snakes and fleas and everything else that washed up from the 3 drainage ditchs that are triagulated around my home about 1.5 miles out.....so I started spraying again and it has taken me up to now to get ahead of these fleas....finally, wiped them out again and now I spray every 6 months without fail. After this stuff is dry, it is perfectly fine for the dogs to walk on. |
This is so useful - thanks for the recommendations on both the food grade diatomaceous earth and DemonMax! It seems ants are becoming more and more prominent each summer here - they're crawling out everywhere on sidewalks and entire backyards! ick! |
Thanks guys! I'll look into both! |
I was just wondering about this too! We are having a house built and it'll be the first time the boys will have a yard to play in and I want to keep the bugs away :) I'm going to check into the 2 mentioned as well! |
a day or two when I first brought my little Kimchi home I sprayed the back yard with a product that had natural ingredients for repelling bugs. lol the yard smelt like cinnamon for a week. I am gonna spray the yard every time the warm season come, like maybe one or twice. I don't bother much in winter as it's not too bad, but it gets pretty bad in summer. This time around I'm spraying with Sentry. Gonna see how that works out. I may try that powder in between times but gotta make sure it's not gonna rain. |
