I Cannot Believe This! My husband and I are heading back to Minnesota from Nevada. I just can not believe the Rv parks in Oklahoma City,Ok. will not allow your pets in their tornado shelter. One park last year was destroyed and this fall when they reopened I asked them about safety for us and our yorkie and parrot. The lady said no pets allowed in the shelter. She told me last year one lady had a tiny yorkie and it survived the tornado. They found it a couple miles away in some rubble.I told this lady that owner should get it for pet abuse ,sure she saves herself but leaves her yorkie.I called other rv parks and they say no animals are allowed they get very scared so you have to leave them in your motorhome. I told all these parks my parrot I have had for 41 years is in a travel cage and Kinder our yorkie is in a crate so they cannot hurt anyone if they get scared. I can't believe it so I guess we will stay with our pets if a tornado came through while traveling through Oklahoma. I am ready for an emergency for my pet kids like food and water. We could go home through Colorado but too cold for the parrot. Amarillo ,Texas is wonderful the park we stay in allows you in the shelter they know our pets are our children. Also have a good place in Kansas. Well I better quit venting but Oklahoma makes me mad. Susan |
That is terrible! Instead of banning pets, they should simply institute rules like vet offices about having the pets leashed or crated. I suppose there could be an issue if a human is allergic to animals. How large are the shelters? Maybe have more than one shelter for people with pets? Lots of people RV with their pets. |
I am not familiar with tornado shelters but I am sure they are different sizes. I just feel my babies are my kids and I could never leave them. I just hope we never see a tornado . Susan |
This is why I always plot my pathway between my departure and my destination....I make sure what motels will accept pets....I KNOW La Quinta Motels accept pets....they have a huge suite that I always reserve, and there is plenty of room for my son, my dogs and me. I set up tarp on the carpet because I do not want my dogs walking on that carpet where God only knows what kind of dogs have been....I even sprinkle flea powder on the carpet under where the tarp is going to go....then I put my x-pens.... two connected to make it larger.....on the tarp and then I put my pee pads inside the x-pens. Does Ok have La Quinta Motels in them? If not, drive across North Texas, we have them all over..... |

How awfull about the tornado shelters! Good grief. Is there another route you could drive that does not deprive you and your pets of shelter? Also Motel 5 and 8 and and comfort Inn suites - also accept pets Sorry I dončt know about RV parks |
I've seen shelters on tv where the people had their dogs/cats with them. I just never imagined that they would refuse to take in animals. I would not leave my dogs behind. |
You would think Oklahoma would have learned a thing or two from Katrina. I just know that 'wither I go, so goes Piper...' Safe and happy travels back to the Midwest (I grew up in southeastern WI)! |
Wow! That's really shocking. I guess the larger pets could be a concern but crated and caged pets should most def be an exception. I couldn't imagine leaving your pets to fend the tornado alone. |
Thought below was appropriate in this instance, and cute, as well! "I've been operating this hotel for many years. In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels, bedclothes, silverware or pictures off the walls. I've never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night for being drunk and disorderly. And I've never had a dog run out on a hotel bill. Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel, and if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to stay here, too." |
