Questions about tails. I can't look up the yorkie library. I THINK it's my security set up on my browser, because I had no problems before an update; so I did try. I don't want a controversy started, I'm just asking. Tail docking. Do most of the breeders automatically do it to puppies, that and dewclaws? I'm asking because I do NOT know if Chewie's was docked or not. I know she doesn't have dewclaws, I looked. Her tail is short; but i don't know if it's too short, or what. She came to us super quiet and highly anxious. I'm learning from reading up on it, as I was curious, that people say that it causes them distress later if NOT docked. The method I just saw LOOKED awful. I'm not saying that in an accusatory way. Just an observation. Do they really hold them and just cut them off like that? Would that cause any long lasting psychological issues? Again, I'm curious and this is the best source of information. How long is a tail if it wasn't cut off? Are they still little stumps? Thank you so much! |
I was able to pull up information about it on this forum through my Ipad of all things; and I read up why it's done, and saw a video from 08 with a yorkie with a tail, so.. her's was most definitely cut off, and I saw that even before watching that video. So, disregard most of the message.. I still want to know if any believe it causes psychological damage? I know she sure as heck didn't let me touch her tail until just recently. That might be her, and not that, though. |
My opinion on tail docking is that it's unnecessary, brutal, barbaric, and really just humanly self-serving at this point in time. My Pfeiffer (our parti girl) has her full tail and it's glorious and stunning, and such a part of her expressing herself. I wish all my little babies had their tails intact. I hope someday docking will be outlawed like it is elsewhere in the world... |
having two boys who are "intact" I agree with you 100% I know that some people roll their eyes at a child being compared to a dog, (I know you guys know what I mean.) I didn't do it to them, and had I the choice, my little gal would have hers, too. I get that a little boy part and a tail are different.. I'm saying that parts of people and animals shouldn't just be chopped off. They are so expressive with their ears and eyes, the tail would be just amazing with that!!! Also, that video I saw turned my stomach and I hope to GOD that not everyone uses that method. I like how Europe outlawed it at one point, and I hope that's here, too. |
I'm also a fan of the natural intact tails. They're like a fan and are beautiful. I know a number of breeders will dock the tails because they'll get judged on the tail at dog shows and won't do so well if the tail hasn't been docked. Also, regarding the dewclaws, a breeder explained to me before how they're quite important and are like their thumbs and that they actually need them for balance. It's such a contentious topic. I know here in Canada the CKC is in the camp of supporting having those procedures done. But at the same time a lot of the younger breeders are against it and challenging it. If I'm not mistaken in the eastern provinces a law has passed to make tail docking taboo. I think in 100 years from now attitudes will have changed all over and tail docking won't be done so often. At least I hope that's what will happen. |
Hi, My Yorkie doesn't have a docked tail. I really like his tail -- it's so very expressive! Our breeder, Rigair, doesn't dock and I know that their dogs have won in dog shows so the longer tail doesn't appear to be a detriment there. Linda |
My two boys' tails are docked. I wish they weren't. I don't see a need for them to be done. |
It's interesting to see how attitudes have changed in just the past 10 years. Not so long ago forward thinking breeders who left dewclaws and tails on were pretty soundly bashed for doing so. |
Thank goodness this practise has become illegal in Europe where I live. Either way, I wouldn't think of doing it to my Yorkies. Also abolished was removing cats' claws which I thought was horrid. |
